Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics (BCBP) has multiple missions of research, teaching and service. The primary mission is to conduct research in broad areas of modern biochemical and biophysical science. A second key provision is dissemination of up-to-date information about biochemistry, biophysics, and related areas. A third major mission is to provide high quality training in the conduct of research to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and teaching of undergraduate, graduate, medical and dental students. A fourth major mission is to render service to the State of North Carolina and to the nation by providing expert advice on scientific issues and by contributing to technology transfer and associated economic development. Internationally recognized scientists that include national academy investigators highlight the department’s research program.

Position Summary
The Business Services Coordinator (BSC) plays a pivotal role in providing administrative and financial support to the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. A key responsibility of this position is serving as the travel coordinator for the department, overseeing all travel arrangements for faculty, staff, students, and guests. The BSC handles various financial tasks, including processing vouchers, purchase requisitions, journal entries, and budget transfers. This role requires a deep understanding of the university’s accounting and financial procedures. Additionally, the position independently oversees and reconciles state, trust, F&A (Facilities & Administration), and faculty start-up funds. The ability to compile and summarize financial data is crucial for preparing monthly financial reports, which are shared with faculty members and the Director of Finance and Administration. These reports play a vital role in budget analysis and forecasting. The BSC is responsible for managing asset inventory which includes recording, tracking, and monitoring the various pieces of equipment within the department while directly reporting to and coordinating with Asset Management. This position is responsible for identifying and submitting requests for all surplus equipment. The BSC organizes, reviews, and oversees records retention in the department. Additionally, this position orders and replenishes supplies, distributes mail, coordinates the pickup and distribution of lab coats, retrieves and distributes campus badges, prints and posts room schedules. In addition to these core duties, the position may also be assigned other tasks as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Disbursement and procurement processing. Strong communication skills both verbal and written. Exceptional attention to detail. Ability to work independently with little to no oversight. Strong organizational skills and attentiveness to detail are essential for this role. Ability to resolve problems by finding creative solutions. Must be flexible, resourceful, and collaborative. Ability to multi-task. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel & Word.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with UNC financial systems such as Connect Carolina (PeopleSoft), BuyCarolina, and Infoporte. Concur and WebTravel are a plus. Surplus Management. Experience reconciling transactions. Experience working with Excel spreadsheets including pivot tables and detailed accounting skills preferable.
