Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG) has been a leader in native plant conservation, horticulture, and education in the southeastern United States for more than 50 years. Position Summary
The North Carolina Botanical Garden (Garden), given its size and complexity, it is imperative that the Garden has a senior level leadership position to ensure appropriate oversight of all Garden business and operations. This position reports directly to the Director of the Garden and serves as a key member of Garden’s Senior Leadership Team. As such, the Business Officer (BO) oversees all business and operations functions provided by staff and works collaboratively with other Garden leaders to develop and implement strategic plans. This position has comprehensive authority over all operations of the Garden including financial management of the Garden’s $12.7M budget ($4.7M operational budget and $8M in endowments), coordinates human resource requests with the Provost Shared Services Office, the Garden Shop, Facility Management and Rentals, and IT management. The Business Officer also plays a key role in setting policy and charting a long-term direction for the organization.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Mid-career with Masters and 1-2 yrs experience; or Bachelors and 2-4 yrs experience
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to work with a high degree of independence. Strong planning, analysis, management skills and demonstrated leadership ability in supervising and developing staff are required. Experience in understanding business processes and re-engineering those to work efficiently and effectively is essential. Strong communication and coalition-building skills are vital, as is a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and collaborative decision making in the workplace. Experience developing and administering budgets. Ability to develop and negotiate contracts related to revenue. Experience with University accounting systems including but not limited to Infoporte, PeopleSoft, and MIP.
Occasional night and weekend work required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer five to ten years of experience managing operations for a complex organization with a track record of increasing responsibilities over this time. Extensive supervisory experience. Demonstrated experience developing and administering complex budgets.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
-Ability to safely lift or move up to 25 lbs with or without accommodations. 
-Ability to work out of doors for extended periods.
