Position Description

This is a fully benefited, full-time Harvard University position that has been funded through December 31, 2025. There is the possibility of renewal, contingent on funding, university priorities and satisfactory job performance.

The Administrative Data Management and Reporting Ecosystem (ADMIRE) project is designed to create a comprehensive data strategy that enables the institution to leverage administrative data to generate insights, inform decisions, make predictions, and more fully understand and optimize our operations. The demand for high-quality, normalized, and interconnected data has continued to increase, with the emergence of generative artificial intelligence putting a spotlight on the challenges of data quality and data governance. This project prioritizes the foundational technology and related services that will enable such initiatives to move forward easily in the future. The ADMIRE project will enable us to leverage the full value of our digital assets for an enterprise-wide approach to data governance, create a modern data ecosystem, and incorporate best practices into our data management capabilities.

The Business Intelligence Engineer is a member of the Reporting, Analytics, and Integrated Data (RAID) Business Intelligence Engineering (BI Engineering) team. We are expanding our services to provide a unified platform for all administrative reporting across the University to deliver enterprise dashboards, business-unit created content, as well as individual, ad hoc reporting capabilities. Other duties as needed or required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate fully in software development lifecycle activities, from problem scoping and requirements gathering, to development, testing, and deployment
  • Design and develop data models, OBIEE/OAS RPD metadata models, reports and dashboards in Analysis and DV
  • Mentor OAS developers from various business units to fulfill their own reporting needs with OAS
  • Help to establish and promote best and recommended practices for reporting in general and OAS specifically
  • Improve and simplify the development process for tenant users, including through automation
  • Provide support, including troubleshooting and resolving production issues
  • Contribute to documentation
  • Occasional work outside of core business hours is required.
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
  • Other duties as needed or required

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Professional experience working with relational databases and writing SQL
  • Experience developing and/or enhancing reporting data models
  • Strong interest in contributing to continuous development process improvement, and analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Understanding of and experience with iterative development (e.g., Agile)
  • Service-oriented mindset and approach

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Work Format Details

HUIT actively supports hybrid work where business needs allow. This position has been designated as a primarily remote position. While this position is primarily remote, travel to campus may be necessary based on business needs and the nature of work. Examples include bi-annual or quarterly Town Halls, critical business meetings or other work events. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
