Business Development Manager, MTRC

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

     Bachelor's degree in Business or Engineering such as manufacturing engineering, systems engineering, industrial engineering, or mechanical engineering.

     20 years of experience in Operations Production Management in manufacturing.

     15 years’ experience with advanced manufacturing technology adoption.

     Due to the U.S Export Control laws and regulations, the candidate hired will need to be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or other "protected individual" (as defined by 8 U.S.C. Sec. 1324b(a)(3).

Preferred Qualifications:

     Masters in Business Administration or Graduate degree in engineering/manufacturing-related scientific discipline.

     7 or more years of experience with the innovation ecosystem, including large, medium, small, and/or startup businesses.

     15 years of experience in data collection, management, and reporting.

     20 years of full-time experience managing teams and individuals.

     Consulting experience.

      Experience interfacing with consultants supporting organizational initiatives.

     Ability to work effectively with the academic, business, private, and governmental sectors.

     Ability to extrapolate current industry knowledge to other industry manufacturing sectors such as Food, DoD, Bio Pharma, Clean Energy and Off Shore Wind.

     Previous knowledge of / experience in economic development.

     Highly proficient, professional experience in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint), electronic messaging and internet applications (Google Apps, other), and database systems.

Soft Skill Qualifications:

  •  Ability to analyze manufacturing operations and determine areas for improvement.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.

Brief Description:
Economic Development is responsible for maximizing Stony Brook University’s (SBU’s) economic impact through science and engineering-based research and innovation partnerships with faculty, students, and industry.  It does so primarily through many programs and units having specific focus, including two NY State Centers of Excellence (COE), one in energy and one in wireless and information technologies (AERTC and CEWIT), one NY State Center of Advanced Technology (CAT) in integrated electric energy systems (CIEES), Intellectual Property Partners (SBU’s technology transfer office), six new venture incubator programs, a Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program. In addition, Econ Dev has a variety of innovation and entrepreneurship programs for faculty and students and works with many other SBU offices, centers, and programs.

This position is a critical business development role for the Long Island Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), a Federal NIST Program operated jointly with NYSTAR. The business development role is responsible for engaging with small to medium-sized manufacturing companies in Nassau and Suffolk counties to secure MEP projects that achieve revenue growth, job creation/retention and process efficiencies toward achievement of MEP performance metrics.  As a business development staff member, you will perform manufacturing site visits, manufacturing assessments to connect the manufacturer with our deep bench of vetted consultants, project kick-offs/close-outs, interface with internal project management team members, and additional administrative duties to include but not limited to; data entry to excel spreadsheets, NIST Impact Survey support, Center event support and service agreement / consultant agreement template completion. The Long Island Manufacturing Extension Partnership Program, known currently as the MTRC - Manufacturing & Technology Resource Consortium, operates under the umbrella of Stony Brook University and is part of the Economic Development (Econ Dev) team.  This position reports directly to the MTRC Center Director (CD).

The successful candidate will have:

  • Extensive knowledge in lean transformation events in manufacturing and continuous improvement to include: 5S+1, error proofing, visual factory, Gemba walks and value stream mapping
  • Operational experience with disciplines in all of the following: production management, quality engineering, material control planning, procurement (supply chain),  and manufacturing engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and analyze metrics to include leading indicators to business health
  • Demonstrated ability to discuss Enterprise Resource Planning with stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability  working in a variety of manufacturing facilities with an understanding of industrial equipment and industry regulations
  • Demonstrated ability with technical project definition and management to include oversight of:  project kick-off, implementation and close-out with heavy Customer interface
  • Experience interfacing with consultants supporting organizational initiatives
  • Ability to work effectively with the academic, business, private, and governmental sectors

Duties and Responsibilities:
Directly interfacing with manufactures in Nassau and Suffolk Counties in the following manner:

     Outreach and business lead generation through email, attendance at Ecosystem and Industry events, and from leads provided by sources such as: FuzeHub, other MEP Centers, LI Ecosystem Partners, SBU Economic Development, etc.

     In facility manufacturing site visits.

     Assessment of the manufacturer’s needs to result in a contracted project, led by a MTRC vetted consultant.

     Coordination/communication of manufacturer’s needs with available Center, State and NIST resources. 

     Lead project kickoff and closeout meetings held with the manufacturer (MTRC’s client) and consultant, to ensure project goals are clearly communicated at the project onset and realized at the project completion.

     Support the quarterly NIST Impact Survey period.  This will include contacting, scheduling, and educating manufacturers about the survey questionnaire.

     Interface and support the MTRC Project Manager with respect to the in-process consultant-led manufacturing client projects.

     Other duties as assigned, for example, in accordance with Economic Development’s annual planning process.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

This position is funded by The Center of Advanced Technology (CAT) award terming on 6/30/2025. We will have the opportunity to recompete for another 10 years of the CAT award. If that is not awarded, the award funding will end on 6/30/2025.
