Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The Business Consultant provides hands-on, private business consulting, and delivers educational programs to entrepreneurs and owners of small existing businesses. The examples of subject matter the consultant will offer are business plan creation, fiscal management, obtaining financing, marketing, growth strategies, operations management, etc.
The Business Consultant is responsible for working with internal and external partners to develop an outreach strategy for the Fairfield, Lexington, and Richland County areas to build awareness of the small business services, develop trust, and increase the number of clients – both entrepreneurs and existing businesses.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in a business-related discipline and at least 2 years of related experience.
The Business Consultant must have a broad base of business knowledge, research, and analytical skills be a creative thinker to assist with problem-solving, and have the ability to manage multiple projects and clients simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Applicants for this position must have a strong working knowledge of basic business tools including financial analysis, business research, marketing, and accounting, and be proficient in the use of computers and MS Office. Consultants must be comfortable speaking in public to represent the SC SBDC at functions such as educational workshops, Chamber of Commerce, and other public events, and in speaking with a diverse group of individuals such as bankers, government officials, and resource providers.
Strong preference for experience working in or with small businesses and for consulting experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience and/or knowledge of commercial business financing, self-starter, goal-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

Business Consulting and Training:
The primary duty is conducting private business consulting on a variety of topics to help entrepreneurs start and grow their companies. Subject matter ranges from general business knowledge, business planning, fiscal management, applying for financing, marketing planning/digital marketing strategies, sales/growth strategies, HR issues, etc. Individuals also develop and conduct group training workshops/seminars on topics of interest or need for small business owners.

Community Outreach and Collaboration:
The Consultant is responsible for raising awareness of the SC SBDC services available to the South Carolina Midlands Area and generating new clients. The individual identifies key partners and develops collaborations that leverage resources in order to help small businesses succeed. Potential relationships include local and regional government agencies, economic development organizations, faith-based institutions, and private sector companies.
