Department Description

The College of Engineering Information Technology Unit (COE IT) within the College of Engineering provides information technology services and support to the departments, programs, and centers within the college and to external clients. COE IT provides service desk/desktop support service for more than 2,500 workstations and laptops, systems administration for more than 200 servers, and development services for business and academic applications and websites.



Job Summary

Under direction of the Info Sys Supv 1, provide IT support for designated unit/department. Responsibilities include desktop set-up and support, and network administration. Install and maintain software; document methods; install and troubleshoot basic client-based network hardware, printers, hubs, and NAM problems. The department uses a heterogeneous mixture of operating systems that includes Apple macOS, Microsoft Windows, and Linux.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position may involve working on computer equipment weighing up to 25 lbs. in awkward positions and moving and lifting furniture weighing up to 50lbs in addition to pushing a cart loaded with computer equipment between buildings or floors. Manipulate and work with equipment mounted in computer racks; access and work with equipment that may be located anywhere from the bottom (floor level) to the top of 7-foot-high racks. Sit for extended periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

·       Work occasional overtime to meet operational needs. Work with constant interruptions and distractions, traffic and noise from telephone, visitors, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Experience providing technical support and consulting services to customers, with both non-technical and technical skills, via telephone, email, remote control, and in-person within a Microsoft Active Directory environment to resolve complex technical issues.

·       Experience working with network protocols and topologies, especially TCP/IP, SNMP, and switched ethernet, and working with networking hardware including printers, cabling, hubs, switches, routers, firewalls, etc. Time management and multitasking skills necessary to handle work in a high volume, fast turnover environment.

·       Experience managing the entire life cycle of a personal computer.

·       Experience with automated OS deployment technologies (e.g., Microsoft MDT, SCCM, or JAMF).

·       Experience authoring both internally and client-focused documentation, including systems documentation (e.g., operational procedures) and user training (e.g., “how-to” documents).

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Skills to install, maintain, configure, secure, and troubleshoot Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS operating systems. Skills and knowledge to diagnose software and hardware-related problems and errors.

·       Knowledge of cyber-safety and computer and network security principles and practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience with systems analysis to integrate complex, interacting software, security, and hardware systems.

·       Experience with more than one systems scripting/automation language, such as batch/shell scripting or interpreted high-level language scripting (e.g., GNU BASH, Windows PowerShell, Python, and Perl).

·       Experience using an endpoint management system and associated programming language to support distributed computers (e.g., BigFix or Microsoft SCCM).

·       Interpersonal communication experience to interact clearly and effectively with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and perspectives clearly and effectively to research, secure, and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems and/or training/guidance to other staff members.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge of University and/or College of Engineering operations and the software applications used to support this business operation.
