This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the campus as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position
To maintain various types of floor surfaces in Campus Academic, Athletic, and Administrative buildings.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
University Preferred Qualifications:
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, one year of experience demonstrating the ability to follow instructions in operating specialized floor-cleaning or other cleaning equipment and in performing medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Job Duties
The Building Environmental Services Technician provides custodial support for the University. Duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Care and clean academic buildings, offices, studios, other state buildings and the grounds surrounding University and State facilities.
2. Maintain equipment in good working order.
3. Compile and maintain checklist and report needs to BES Supervisor or appropriate lead BES Technician in the absence of Supervisor.
4. Maintain various types of floor surfaces to include vacuuming, spotting and shampooing or water extracting carpet, dust mopping, and stripping or spray buffing resilient tile floors.
Other Work Responsibilities
1. Assist the BES Supervisor and lead Technicians in testing and making recommendations on supply and equipment purchases.
2. Must be able to properly use and care for all manual and power equipment and chemicals required in floor maintenance, housekeeping, and recycling functions.
3. Follow established Facilities Management, UNC Charlotte, and State Policies and Procedures.
4. Perform other related duties as assigned and/or delegated.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Knowledge of cleaning procedures, one year of experience demonstrating the ability to follow instructions in operating specialized floor-cleaning or other cleaning equipment and in performing medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
3. Three years experience in institutional housekeeping with floor care experience preferred.
4. The ability to properly use and care for all manual and power equipment and chemicals required in Building Environmental Services and floor care functions.
5. The ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation, and comprehension) required.
6. Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.
7. Computer literate.
8. Knowledge and skill with Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and willingness to learn new programs.
9. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds and cultures.
10. Ability to foster and create an atmosphere of teamwork.
11. The selected candidate must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications
Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification.
A valid driver’s license is required. The BES Technician operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and is required to possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver’s license upon appointment to the position.
