The University of Southern California’s (USC) Department of University Relations, TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and enterprising professional for the position of Budget Business Technician.

USC TRIO Educational Talent Search launched at USC in the Fall of 1991. Educational Talent Search provides academic, career, and financial counseling to encourage students to graduate from high school and continue to post-secondary education. ETS also provides academic opportunities for youths who are at risk by encouraging them to re-engage with the educational system, complete their high school education, and continue to higher education.

Job Summary:

This position performs a combination of duties related to processing and assisting in monitoring business transactions and daily operations related to the three (3) TRIO Educational Talent Search grants.

  • Assists in performing analyses of technical, clerical, and administrative tasks related to operating budgets, including sponsored research accounts, requisitions, purchase orders, work orders, travel documents, transfer request forms, other business-related documents, etc.

  • Assists staff in financial transactions through Workday, such as purchasing equipment and supplies and accounting for travel expenditures, reimbursements, supplier invoice requests, stipends, and internal service requests.

  • Interacts with TRIO Business Manager vendors pays invoices, prepares monthly expense reports, and processes department orders, requisitions, and travel and procurement card purchases.

  • Ensures confidentiality and controls access to sensitive information such as grant participants’ files.

  • Dependent on departmental needs, assists with the onboarding process and requirements for student workers and temporary staff.

  • When necessary, serves as a backup to TRIO Business Manager and assists ETS Program. Manage annual and monthly obligations/budget preparation.

  • Maintains internal accounting records, reconciles account balances and activity to university financial records, and corrects errors if necessary.


  • Develops and maintains electronic databases and/or other records for reporting purposes.

  • Reviews and signs, as authorized. Enters and/or verifies database transactions as necessary.

  • Provide technical support to ETS staff to ensure compliance with the Department of Education and the University of Southern California.

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

The Budget Business Technician will report to the Educational Talent Search’s Program Manager and work closely with other professional staff members.

This full-time, exempt, grant-funded position is contingent on continued funding.

Preferred Skills and Ability:

  • Computer skills, including complete knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, mail merges and printing, office equipment, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and any supportive skills.

Preferred Education/Qualifications: Associate degree or combined experience and education, college coursework in business administration, and two years of office financial experience with federally funded grants.

Minimum Education: High school or equivalent, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education


Minimum Experience: Two years

Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related office financial experience to provide a knowledge of accounts payable, income and expense accounting and reconcilement, and budget preparation.

This position's annual base salary range is $25.00 - $27.00 per hour.
