The Proclaiming Disability Arts project is seeking candidates for the part-time position of Book Accessibility Researcher.

The Proclaiming Disability Arts project (PDA) is a book development project housed in the Media, Culture, and Communication Department of the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.  Under the direction of Simi Linton, the PDA project's book will mark this moment in the evolution of disability arts, build its history, map the terrain, and discuss its transformative potential in the arts world.  The PDA project is funded with support from the Ford Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The PDA project seeks to create a book that provides cutting-edge access while offering all of the pleasures of a well-crafted book.  The Book Accessibility Researcher will collaborate with the PDA team to fulfill that mandate by researching accessible forms and formats for the book, and providing feedback and suggestions to the full PDA team.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Research:  Research existing forms and inquire into forms yet to be developed.  The extent and methodology of the research will be determined in collaboration with the PDA team and will include: (1) accessible physical book designs for ease-of-use by a variety of disabled readers, including designs that are hands-free, in large print, and in Braille; (2) open access formats; (3) accessible e-books; and (4) video presentation of the book's content in ASL.
  • Organization:  In collaboration with the PDA team, develop a system of organizing and sharing research findings on accessible forms and the associated costs.
  • Design feedback and suggestions:  Provide feedback and suggestions on multiple forms for use by the PDA team in the publication of the project's book.

This is a part-time position of eight hours per week.  In accordance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the compensation range for this position will be $26-$31 per hour.  New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

  • Specific expertise and experience in accessible book design
  • Knowledge of accessible book forms and formats
