BME Laboratory Manager

Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, provide leadership and scientific expertise in the planning implementation of major projects, services, and/or activities. Plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate the engineering work on academic and research endeavors occurring within the Department of Biomedical Engineering by overseeing all aspects relating to the successful operation of all teaching laboratories, and where appropriate providing operational support and troubleshooting during student-based laboratory exercises. This includes both the department’s teaching laboratories and research laboratories. The manager will make independent decisions on theory, problems, and method in an attempt to develop new or improved techniques, procedures, or equipment. This will require application of intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles in specialty areas, while maintaining a “can-do” customer/ student/ faculty centered mission.



  • Oversee research and teaching lab facilities management for BME: Provide leadership and scientific expertise in the planning and implementation of major projects, services, and/ or activities utilizing virtual freedom of action within authorized results. Plan, develop, implement, and manage day-to-day operations of the laboratories. This will demand a high level of initiative and the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Provide expert consultation and collaboration regarding technical requirements, capabilities, and advancement opportunities; make substantive contributions in diverse technical areas. Advise faculty, students and research staff on the use of the equipment and instrumentation. Consult on the design of experiments as requested. Support and perform laboratory teaching when required and as deemed necessary. (15%)
  • Develop advanced laboratory exercises and guide their execution in laboratory courses. Carry out complex or unique assignments important to the advancement of the field. Design and fabricate components required for teaching experiments. Make independent decisions on theory, problems, and method in an attempt to develop new or improved laboratory practices, procedures or equipment. Evaluate and advise faculty on computer programs, hardware, “canned” lab experiments required to operate teaching laboratory. (15%)
  • Provide technical direction to other research staff, engineering associates, technicians, and/or students; facilitate workshops and demonstrations on research methods; educate and train users on research methodology and effective tools and techniques. Supervise staff and resources to meet program objectives. Supervise undergraduate students and graduate students functioning as TA’s for existing BME teaching labs, and be solely responsible for assigning department laboratory repair and maintenance projects. Administer the security systems for the undergraduate and research laboratories and liaise with Access Services to provide card access for students, faculty and research staff. Advise undergraduate students working on their senior projects using undergraduate laboratory facilities, providing guidance, and leadership on design and fabrication. Specify work schedules and supervise student laboratory assistants. (20%)
  • Manage research laboratory space and equipment. Make sure each research and undergraduate laboratory meets Case standards and safety codes and resolve problems or situations that may occur in these laboratories. Develop, implement, and manage maintenance programs for the research laboratories. Apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles in BME specialty areas. Direct engineering repairs, maintenance, and servicing of hardware and instrumentation within both teaching and faculty labs. Advise the department chair in preparing proposals for the acquisition and replacement of research laboratory equipment. Work with outside vendors to develop specifications and obtain quotes for equipment and services. Research prices and advise faculty, students, and staff on the best vendors to use depending on the type of material or service required. Oversee the renovations and set-up of new research laboratory space, including working with outside building contractors and CSE design/renovation leader. Support existing department facilities manager to complete space inventory, equipment inventory, telephone inventory, and maintaining laboratories in BME.  (45%)


  • Work with the business manager on budget requirements for the development and maintenance of laboratories. (3%)

    Department: Contact with the department chair to advise and report on laboratory issues. Contact with the Business Manager to coordinate purchases of equipment and supplies. Faculty and research staff - advise on laboratory and experiment planning issues; designing and implementing existing and new laboratory exercises. Contact with the BME facilities manager - assist with completion of lab, equipment, space and telephone inventories to ensure labs and lab experiences are well received by students; assist in trouble shooting those not working as planned. Work with the departmental Business Manager and CSE Facilities Managers to oversee renovations of laboratories and lecture rooms.

    University: Work with the CSE Director of Facilities Management on issues affecting all the laboratories and facilities, personnel access, etc. Work with the University’s Office of Construction Management on issues affecting the department’s laboratories and facilities as needed. Serve as liaison with the Office of Occupational and Environmental Safety as needed.

    External: Establish good working relationships with vendors, suppliers and outside building contractors. Obtain quotes for equipment and services. Organize and supervise the execution of services and the delivery of equipment.

    Students: Significant interaction with both undergraduate and graduate students to train and advise them in laboratory procedures and use of equipment.



    Will supervise 8-10 undergraduate and graduate students yearly serving as TA’s for BME laboratory courses.



    Experience: 6 years of experience (includes undergraduate experiences, if lab based) preferably have a background in biomedical engineering, engineering technologies and computer systems. (10-15 years of experience preferred)

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Knowledge relevant to the maintenance of experimental equipment.
  • Ability to operate all standard machine shop equipment and machine tools.
  • Proficiency in a wide range of manufacturing processes including milling, welding, turning, drilling and inspection.
  • Knowledge relevant to the maintenance of computer hardware and peripherals; General wiring and installation of computer network hardware equipment; and installation of software is a plus


    Typical computing laboratory; may include office work on database and IT issues. There will be no need to use a respirator. Occasional use of personal vehicle to collect supplies from local vendors.
