The Biostatistician / Epidemiologist will work with UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative under the direction of the Director of Statistics and Data Science and other faculty principal investigators.

The Biostatistician / Epidemiologist will apply statistical and epidemiological methodologies to original research projects that focus on homelessness and its effects on health. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with a variety of data sources, including administrative and longitudinal survey data and will be able to clean, manage, link, and analyze these sources. They will be passionate about using data to find innovative solutions to homelessness.  The incumbent will be able to conduct analyses and data management on multiple projects concurrently.

The Biostatistician / Epidemiologist will:

  • Report to the Director of Statistics and Data Science of the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) and work closely with other analysts. The incumbent will work collaboratively with other faculty investigators, trainees, staff and partner organizations.
  • Draw upon extensive knowledge of causal inference and survival analysis to drive methodological approaches for longitudinal data.
  • Determine data sources for gathering available data – including utilizing San Francisco and surrounding counties’ data, as well as California data when appropriate.  
  • Plan and design data management and data analysis of multiple studies.
  • In consultation with the Director of Statistics and Data Science and principal investigators, develop multivariable data analysis plans, using appropriate statistical and survival analysis methods. The Biostatistician / Epidemiologist should be able to carry out the analysis plan independently.
  • Provide statistical input into the development of data collection tools, including questionnaires
  • Design processes to guarantee strict privacy of data
  • Provide documentation, including drafting statistical sections of grant proposals, manuscripts, and reports.
  • Contribute to study design, ensure the data necessary to evaluate study hypotheses are collected, and the resulting datasets are of sufficient quality to provide reliable results
  • Mentor and advise less experienced analysts in research methods.

Department Description

The Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) is a research and policy initiative within the Division of Vulnerable Populations. The BHHI is an academic program with a focus on developing and disseminating evidence-based solutions to prevent and end homelessness. The BHHI aims to advance and transform policy and practice related to homelessness through 1) conducting policy-oriented research, using a strategic science orientation and community-engaged practices; 2) analyzing existing research and translating it to policy and practice audiences;  3) disseminating findings to key decision-makers in policy, practice and the general public; 4) providing policy translation at local, state, and federal levels; 5) developing and maintaining relationships with a broad array of stakeholders; and 6) training the next generation of policy-oriented researchers. 
 
The Division of Vulnerable Populations is a research division within the UCSF Department of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital which focuses on policy-oriented research regarding structural and social determinants of health.  The DVP houses the BHHI, Amend, and the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP).

CVP is a multidisciplinary research center focused on providing the evidence to drive changes in patient care, community, and policy. To achieve these aims, CVP focuses on diverse topics, such as homelessness, food insecurity, immigrant health, and increasing diversity in the biomedical workforce. Partnering with the community, CVP is tackling some of the most challenging problems in society through discovery, innovation, policy, and advocacy.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Advanced ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced project management skills. Ability to lead and influence within and external to the project team.
  • Advanced research skills at a level to propose analysis direction, discuss with principal investigators and, when appropriate, devise alternate solutions and develop recommendations.
  • Advanced ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions relative to research.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to work discreetly with sensitive and confidential data.
  • Ability to mentor less experienced analysts in statistical techniques and offer research advice
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience working in an academic or think-tank environment
  • 5 years of experience in a related field / with relevant research experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of related experience
  • Advanced skills in programming, statistical analysis, and data management in STATA, SAS, or R.
  • Advanced knowledge of quantitative research methods for observational studies and program evaluations with a general focus on causal inference and a specific focus on analysis of longitudinal data and survival analysis
  • Advanced knowledge of academic publication process and ability to propose research direction that will lead to impactful research results.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
