The University of Saint Joseph invites qualified applicants to serve as part-time adjunct faculty within the Biology Department.  The department is actively recruiting several adjuncts for the Spring 2024 semester for faculty to teach lecture and laboratory section(s) of the following courses: 


Microbiology Laboratory, Tuesdays 6:30 - 9:20 p.m. and/or Thursdays 6:30 - 9:20 p.m. (3 credits)

BIOL301 lab covers topics including, but not limited to: use of the microscope, bacterial cell staining, bacterial growth and quantitation, protist identification, phage titering, and research projects related to the quantity and diversity of bacterial species in local environments. A full-time faculty member will be coordinating the lab sections and will provide guidance and teaching materials ahead of time.

Environmental Health Laboratory, Thursdays 3:30 - 5:20 p.m. (2 credits)

Introduces the physical, chemical and biological factors in our environment that influence human health and human activities that influence the health of the environment. Students will learn assessment and control of environmental factors causing or contributing to disease with an emphasis on preventing disease and creating health-supportive environments. Students will also learn the implications of occupational health and disaster preparedness. A full-time faculty member will be coordinating the lab sections and will provide guidance and teaching materials ahead of time.

Earth Science Laboratory, Tuesdays 1 - 2:50 p.m. (2 credits)

This laboratory course will cover basic geologic concepts including but not limited to rock formation, CT geologic history, plate tectonics, volcanic formation, coastal erosion, landscape formation, and glaciation and the impact of geologic changes on human populations. A full-time faculty member will be coordinating the lab sections and will provide guidance and teaching materials ahead of time.

The Biology Department in the School of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education offers both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biology.  In addition to serving Biology majors, the department provides service courses for Nursing, Nutrition, Health Science, Biochemistry, and Exercise Science majors.  Faculty in the department are actively involved in mentoring research, and tailor degree electives to specific career focuses such as healthcare, environmental science, and biomedical science.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Teach 2-6 credits designated as contact time with the students.
  • Prepare pre-lab lectures, projects, homework, assessments, and other student assignments that align with the course syllabus.
  • Grade all student assignments in a timely manner. Provide appropriate feedback to students to promote academic success.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours; Adjunct must be available a minimum of one additional hour per week, either in-person or virtually, to provide support to students.
  • Attend program/department meetings as requested.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the current methods and practices for teaching college-level courses; present qualified and clear instruction related to the course subject.
  • Learn and utilize technology offered at USJ to facilitate teaching.
  • Meet all designated class periods in the semester as dictated by the academic calendar.
  • Submit mid-semester and final grades to the Registrar's Office within required time-frames, leave all course records with the department chairperson upon completion of the course.
  • Provide a supportive atmosphere for student success.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree or higher in the scientific discipline of Biology or related field when teaching undergraduate courses. Degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population.
  • Commitment to the University of Saint Joseph mission.
  • Prior teaching experience strongly preferred.

Additional Information:
  • Teaching assignments are part-time, on a semester basis only and are dependent on student enrollment and department need.
  • Courses are offered in a variety of formats (as decided upon by the Registrar's Office) including in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous online. Courses are offered at various times, including day, evening, weekdays, and Saturdays. Please indicate in your cover letter your general availability and your experience teaching in various formats.
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability towards the performance of job duties.

Adjunct rates per 2-credit lab course:

  • Non-Terminal Degree/0-6 Credits Experience = $1933.33
  • Terminal Degree/0-6 Credits Experience = $2066.67
  • Non-Terminal Degree/7+Credits Experience = $2200.00
  • Terminal Degree/7+ Credits Experience = $2400.00

Adjunct rates per 3-credit lab course:

  • Non-Terminal Degree/0-6 Credits Experience = $2,900.00
  • Terminal Degree/0-6 Credits Experience = $3,100.00
  • Non-Terminal Degree/7+Credits Experience = $3,300.00
  • Terminal Degree/7+ Credits Experience = $3,600.00
