Position Summary Information


Position Summary
The Basic Needs Coordinator reports to the Director for Community Engagement and Sustainability. This role serves to coordinate resource support to help alleviate barriers to education for students facing basic need insecurities. The position will coordinate food insecurity initiatives, the Gov’s emergency fund, and additional programs to help support the basic needs of students . The coordinator will serve with a student-centered approach that contributes to a caring and safe campus life environment that supports the holistic success of students through basic need resource support.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the management of the campus food pantry, including the coordination of donations, student access, volunteer management, and health and safety education.
  • Coordinate support programing including the meal swipe program, winter coat rack program, food drives, and others.
  • Collaborate with university counseling services, health center, disability services, faculty, and staff to coordinate comprehensive support for students.
  • Work to local and regional non profits to provide external resources to address diverse campus needs.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student case records in compliance with university policies and applicable laws (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA).

Gov Emergency Fund
  • Coordinate the emergency fund program for students facing unexpected financial stress.
  • Provides educational programing on financial literacy topics focused on SNAP benefits, personal budgeting, financial credit, simple tax return assistance, and personal loans.
  • Coordinate care case management referral of students requesting resource challenges.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and interpretation of university policies regarding student resource support.
  • Monitor and track legislation and legal precedent to ensure that the university is in compliance with relevant and current laws as it relates to student resource support.
  • Supervise a AmeriCorps VISTA member.
  • Serve as a key leader in assisting the University’s response in providing resources, including outreach and support to students facing basic need insecurities.
  • Provide consultation to faculty/staff about students facing basic need insecurities.
  • Collaborate with community partners to provide resource support for students.
  • Participate in state wide research and feedback on the state of student basic needs at APSU.
  • Participate in related professional organizations for continuing development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) as well as Ellucian Banner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public.
  • Ability to detect and correct grammatical and spelling errors in written correspondence.
  • Ability to accurately reconcile budget statements and maintain records of financial transactions and expenditures.
  • Ability to maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to accurately review process and maintain student travel and University travel paperwork.
  • Ability to conduct research and prepare reports. Ability to understand budgeting process, maintain budgetary accounting records and make mathematical computations accurately.
  • Ability to assist in the planning, organization and implementation of programs and events conducted by the central Student Affairs office.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a team member.
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours as needed.
Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree
  • Knowledge of best practices within student support, basic needs and insecurity resource support, or care coordination at a university or college;
  • Skills that exemplify collaboration, communication, action and advocacy.
  • A background check will be required of the selected applicant.

Preferred
  • Master’s degree, and at least 2 years of related experience as a full-time professional or graduate assistantship experience.
