BASE Graduate Assistant

Job Summary:

Under the supervision and leadership of the Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs, with a dotted line to the BASE Senior Director, the Graduate Assistant (GA) will assist with development, implementation, and assessment of BASE Initiative components including; the Black Resource Center, Black Scholars Program, Marshall-Riley Learning-Learning Community, and Black Leadership Fellowship Program. The Graduate Assistant will also serve as a mentor and resources to BASE Student Interns, in their development of Black Resource Center programming. Additionally, the BASE Graduate Assistant will serve as a campus-wide representative, establishing relationships with USF recognized undergraduate and graduate clubs and organizations, USF Student Life departments, and the Black-Identified students populations to promote the relative aspects of the BASE Initiative.

Graduate Assistant Responsibilities:

Program Development

  • Assist with development and facilitation of social, educational, and professional enrichment opportunities and workshops ordered through the Black Resource Center.

  • Serve as a campus-wide student representative for the BASE Initiative.

  • Assist as needed in the coordination of BASE community engagement initiatives (i.e. Black Scholars, Marshall-Riley Living-Learning Community). 

  • Represent BASE at prospective and current student signature events, including but not limited to: Black Student Orientation, Day of the Dons, Black Resource Fair, Destination USF, BRC tabling events, etc.

Assessment 

  • Conduct assessments (ie. survey and focus groups) and provide recommendations for improvement based on the needs of participants 

  • Assist in determining university-wide enrichment opportunities and initiatives for Black students

Marketing and Communication

  • Manage BASE Social Media channels. Create and publish content that enhances affinity for BASE, promote BASE components, share programs’ successes, and encourages program engagement/ involvement.

  • Assist in the creation of a marketing strategy to encourage participation from current students, faculty, and staff, as well as future students. 

  • Design effective communication that provides important information to students throughout the year (flyers, social media, text and phone calls, etc)

  • Assist in maintaining BASE calendar and track attendance at events


Other Duties

  • Perform administrative related duties including data entry, running errands, maintaining calendars, and responding to general inquiries

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the BASE Senior Director & Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs.

Terms of Graduate Assistantship: 

  • The GA averages 15-20 hours per week and is compensated.  

  • This position is for 10 months, and the candidate will be evaluated throughout the year to determine continuous employment. 

  • The GA must be skilled in multitasking and available to work some evenings and weekends.

  • Programs may also require travel on weekends. 

  • Available for one hour bi-weekly supervision meetings on campus during the hours of 9am-5pm. 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Passionate about working with students of color.

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education. 

  • Currently enrolled full-time in a graduate degree from USF or other approved programs. 

  • Ability to plan and facilitate programs.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations, faculty, staff, and students.

  • Effective written and interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Experience working with new student programming, programming for underrepresented students, first-generation student program, and or retention related initiatives.

  • Experience in facilitating and implementing assessment strategies.

  • Good disciplinary standing at USF

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Preferred Qualifications: (Optional)  

  • Experience in public speaking, technical (graphic design, social media), training and development, community building and influential leadership.
