I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides legal guidance and helps resolve legal disputes on a broad range of matters affecting the university. OGC advises on legal and regulatory questions associated with the university’s activities, represents the interests of the university in administrative and judicial proceedings, and supervises the activities of outside counsel.
The Attorney Fellow position is a limited term position that assists a team of lawyers in providing legal and strategic advice to the university, and assists with a wide variety of legal and policy issues that confront a large urban teaching and research institution. The Attorney Fellow’s work may include: contract review and drafting, litigation support, regulatory compliance and research and advice on a variety of matters, including student and academic issues, and issues related to health law, intellectual property and technology transfer, business and real estate, and employment and labor law.
This position may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Juris Doctorate degree from accredited institution. Admission to a state bar is not required at commencement of the fellowship, but the successful candidate must sit for a bar exam and be eligible for admission to the District of Columbia Bar by a date provided by the Office of General Counsel.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be a 2023 or 2024 graduate of an accredited institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Strong academic record, with journal membership preferred.
  • Bar membership is not required at the start of the position. Must have taken the bar examination prior to September 2024 and pass the bar within six months.
  • Ability to learn and apply new legal principles, manage a sizeable volume of work and deadlines, and respond to the needs of various client representatives.
  • Diligent and hard worker who thrives in and can contribute to the office’s fast-paced, collegial team environment.
  • Graduates from GW Law School preferred.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
