Job Summary:

The Assistant/Associate Professor participates in research, medical education, program administration and clinical activities in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health and the School of Medicine. The position is actively involved in scholarship/publications, extramural funding, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, and projects. The position provides service, mentors students and residents, and actively recruits program applicants. The position provides expertise in preventive medicine in reducing health challenges in East Texas, Texas and beyond in collaboration with scientists and health researchers.

Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:

·       Assist the Program Director with the development of clinical services (individual and group) appropriate to our specialty to include but not limited to preventive medicine, lifestyle medicine, and tobacco cessation counseling and treatment.

·       Provide clinical care of patients within the above-mentioned clinics including clinic oversight with the program director.

·       Provide supervision and teaching to medical students and residents in departmental clinics as noted above.

·       Serve in clinical duties approximately 40% of time.

·       Serve as the assistant program director for the public health and general preventive medicine residency program.

·       Provide specialty appropriate lectures, case conferences, book studies, etc. to medical students, residents, faculty within the health science center and the community.

     Develops an independent collaborative research program in prevention.

     Participate in current grant writing projects and grant implementation when grants are funded.

     Assist with departmental cancer prevention grant administration and implementation.

     Participate in emergency preparedness activities for the University and public health district.

     Support public health and community health activities as assigned.

     Participates in committee functions and university governance as assigned.

     Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Required Education / Experience:

    Medical degree from an accredited medical school.

     Board eligibility or board certified in public health and general preventive medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (if board eligible, must be certified within three years of graduation)

     Certification by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, preferred.

     Certification by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, preferred.

     A commitment to excellence in teaching and research.

REQUIRED LICENSES/ CERTIFICATION

     Licensure from the Texas Board of Medical Examiners

     DEA license

     Become certified in smoking cessation within one year.

     By year two become board certified in Lifestyle medicine through the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.

     By year three become board certified in obesity medicine by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
