Position Overview:

The Associate Vice President for Institutional Equity, under the direction of the Vice President for Institutional Equity, will assist in providing leadership for the University’s diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and social justice efforts for students, faculty and staff. The Associate Vice President will implement best practices in co-creating a sustainable vision for inclusive excellence and serve as a trusted partner to bring together community resources in support of institutional change and growth.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Vice President for Institutional Equity in providing vision, leadership and a framework to foster inclusive excellence and set campus-wide diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging priorities, policies and procedures.
  • Develop, implement, promote and assess the effectiveness of curricular, co-curricular and workplace programs and initiatives that support diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and social justice across campus with an emphasis on enhancing inclusion and belonging of marginalized and underrepresented student, faculty and staff populations.
  • Support bias support and education efforts by employing restorative principles to engage with impacted individuals and facilitating proactive and ongoing education and training in response to reported hate/bias concerns.
  • Develop close collaboration with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Human Resources and other key campus partners to provide expertise and serve as a campus resource to resolve organizational concerns that hinder success for historically marginalized or underrepresented communities on campus, e.g., international, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, religious and spiritual communities.
  • Recruit, lead, develop and provide strategic direction for a team (e.g., professional staff, graduate assistants, interns, DEI liaisons) who assist in implementing DEIB initiatives.
  • Represent the Division in various campus, community, state and national settings and participate in campus responses to events impacting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D., Ed.D. or J.D. 
  • Five years of increasingly responsible professional experience as a leader with proven success working with student, faculty and staff diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and/or social justice initiatives.
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy, mediate controversy and foster communication across multiple viewpoints to engage others in productive and civil dialogues that advance equity, inclusion and belonging efforts.
  • Strong and demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of evidence-based best practices, research and literature related to social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and intersectionality.
  • Extensive experience developing curricular and co-curricular DEIB programs and services for individuals from historically marginalized or underrepresented identities.
  • Considerable experience in presenting educational and training programs to diverse communities.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with, be sensitive to and respond to the needs and concerns of all constituents of the University, including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the public.
  • Understanding of and ability to navigate challenging national, state and local political climates around diversity, equity and inclusion with a demonstrated understanding of the impact of policy on higher education and the University’s vision of inclusive excellence.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities to include the proven ability to engage in strategic thinking, critical analysis, problem-solving/conflict resolution and supervision of teams.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, to include the ability to communicate effectively on sensitive topics and/or difficult issues.

Note: Master’s Degree with at least seven years of related experience may be substituted for the terminal degree.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Experience teaching related courses.

  • Experience with program assessment and strategic planning.
