Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
The Associate University Librarian is responsible for management of university libraries on Stockton, Sacramento, and San Francisco campuses. This encompasses diverse responsibilities, including but not limited to research and instruction, personnel management, collection development, facility oversight, budgeting, operations, and alignment of services with the university’s mission. This position combines strong leadership, expertise in librarianship, and a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of a diverse student population. The Associate University Librarian collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement innovative library programs, services, and initiatives that empower students to excel academically while ensuring equitable access to information resources.
Essential Functions
  • Leads the development and implementation of user-centered library services and programs that align with the needs of students.
  • Oversees collection development and management efforts, ensuring that library resources align with the evolving academic programs and research interests of students.
  • Utilizes assessment data and user feedback to make informed decisions regarding resource acquisition, deselection, and format diversification.
  • Develops and promotes initiatives that support student success, including information literacy programs, research skills workshops, and academic support services.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with faculty, campus organizations, and student services units to promote library resources and services.Implements new practices and technologies in the areas of integrated library systems, discovery layer, and online resources, to enhance user experience.
  • Develops assessment strategies to measure the effectiveness of library services, resources, and programs related to student success, user-centered services, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Utilizes data-driven insights to inform decision-making and continuously improve library offerings. Provides leadership and supervision to library staff, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment. Supports staff professional development opportunities and promotes a culture of continuous learning.
  • Serves as the University Libraries’ representative and advocate to relevant campus, consortia, multi-institutional groups as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in library or information science or other relevant discipline.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience in an academic or research library .

  • Demonstrated ability to engage librarians and staff in successful teamwork, collaborative planning, and the delivery of user-centered services.
  • A record of success in developing productive partnerships on campus and across institutions .
  • Experience leading, supervising, mentoring, and providing development opportunities for librarians and staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and public communication skills including ability to serve as an advocate and spokesperson for University Libraries.
  • Ability to lead organizational change, engage in big picture thinking and build consensus around a strategic vision.
  • Ability to independently investigate and assess innovations, come up with or inspire creative solutions to problems, and delegate responsibility appropriately.
  • Ability to coach and guide others in the development, framing, and communication of strategic initiatives.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in higher education and new developments in reference, instruction, access services, facilities operations, and the use of information technology in support of a library’s mission.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in both office and academic environments. Work performed during standard business hours and must be flexible to work during weeknights and occasional weekends. Position may require traveling to all three campuses (Stockton, Sacramento, and San Francisco).
Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $77,730 to $106,880 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
