Position Summary

The Associate or Senior Associate Athletics Director - DEI and Student-Athlete Development will be responsible for the development and oversight of the DEI Division and the Student-Athlete Development Division within the Department of Athletics.  For the DEI Division, the primary focus will be the implementation, growth and oversite of the newly developed DEI vision and strategic initiatives for the department. This includes providing training and workshops, assisting coaches and student-athletes with DEI concerns and developing areas for the student-athletes. The Associate or Senior Associate Athletics Director will have an opportunity to be part of the athletics leadership team and will work closely with University VP for DEI.

 For the Student-athlete development division, the overarching goal will be to provide each student-athlete with the skills necessary to achieve success in their personal and professional lives beyond their collegiate athletic experiences. This individual will be responsible for creating, planning, and implementing effective leadership, service, professional/career and personal development workshops, events and initiatives for all departmental athletic programs. This includes working with both internal and external partners of the University of New Mexico to promote the comprehensive development of the student-athlete population. This position will provide oversight for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and other activities which reflect the enhancing the student-athlete experience and overall welfare.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a leader in developing a diverse and inclusive work environment in the Department of Athletics.
  • Develop, facilitate, and implement the new diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) vision, which aligns with the department’s mission and core values.
  • Oversee the department-wide strategic initiatives to foster the advancement of DEI within the Department of Athletics.
  • Create and implement DEI training programs for coaches, staff, and student-athletes.
  • Strategically partner with the University’s Office of DEI to provide multiple services for the coaches, staff, and student-athletes.
  • Evaluate diversity initiatives by tracking metrics for the programs.
  • Continued development and execution of the L.I.F.E program, a cohesive and comprehensive development program for student-athletes and athletic department staff members ensuring continued alignment with the Athletics Department's vision.
  • Organize career development opportunities which coincide with the academic and career paths of student-athletes with respect to their current phase of education.
  • Oversight of student-athlete specific programming including
  • Collaborate and partner with Lobo Center for Student-Athlete Success staff regarding ongoing programs to enhance the overall development of our student-athletes.
  • Serve as liaison to UNM’s Alumni Letterman’s Association to facilitate networking, internship, and mentoring opportunities for student-athletes.
  • Identify, implement, oversee, and track community service opportunities for all student-athletes.
  • Meet one-on-one with student-athletes to provide guidance related to career development and graduate school admissions.
  • Serve as liaison to UNM’s Office of Career Services to coordinate opportunities for career development, networking, and career fairs.
  • Participate in the planning, writing, development, and implementation of current and potential future grant proposals.
  • Provide various reports for internal and external partners.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

2 years experience with leading DEI programs in a college setting.
