What You Will Achieve

As an Associate Scientist, you will be at the center of our operations and you'll find that everything we do, every day, is in line with an unwavering commitment to quality. You will become a member of Pfizer Chemical Research and Development (CRD) Sustainability Team, and will work under the guidance of the Sustainable Chemistry Lead. Your work alongside the entire department will help implement an overall strategy for the collection, analysis, management, and communication of sustainability related data and metrics. You will help execute the CRD Vision by measuring key sustainable metrics evolution over time as we commit to the development of greener processes to manufacture Pfizer APIs from clinical to commercial. Your role will support the company towards its goal of becoming Net Zero by 2040. You are able to work independently or within a small team under guidance from strategy leaders. Essential skills include excellent oral and written communication, proficient office computer software knowledge including data management (Microsoft Office, Spotfire) and teamwork-oriented mindset. Ideally, you have a solid knowledge of organic chemistry and you are passionate about data collection as well as sustainability.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Liaise with Pfizer internal subject matter experts to obtain information on synthetic routes and material procurement to assess PMI and LCA metrics
  • Collate key metrics for the Pfizer portfolio using existing tools, including product mass intensity (PMI), energy and carbon footprint.
  • Identify trends among the collected data and regularly communicate progress to the CRD Sustainability Team and WRDM Green Chemistry Team.
  • Share learnings on metrics and trends within CRD department to help colleagues' education and maintain contemporaneous knowledge in the group
  • Act as a knowledgeable point of contact for Sustainable Chemistry and promote Green Chemistry and Sustainability across the Organization.
  • Stay up to date with literature reports and external technologies that could be brought in and impact CRD Sustainability Strategy.
  • Support initiatives aiming at decarbonization of CRD labs and manufacturing sites.

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science or related field with 0 to 2 years of experience.
  • Good working knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry principles (reaction types/names) or GMP documentation pertaining to manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (batch records).
  • Demonstrated performance in collection, management and handling of any data.
  • Self-motivated, organized, capable of working independently, and in a collaborative environment.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate results through written reports, publications and related documentation.

Nice-to-Have
  • Synthetic organic chemistry laboratory experience either through academic research or internship in industry
  • Familiarization with scientific literature search and interpretation
  • Thorough knowledge of/passion for green and sustainable chemistry

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to perform complex tasks with appropriate mental agility, including mathematical calculations and complex data analysis.
  • Working at a computer.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • May require occasional (international) travel to support team goals and attend conferences (up to 10%).

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $54,700.00 to $91,100.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 7.5% of the base salary.
