Job Description Summary:
The Office of Academic Planning and Assessment was created in 2008 to meet the University’s growing needs for institutional data, analysis, and assessment. It includes the Office of Institutional Research and Planning and the Office of Survey Research and Analysis which work together to provide a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of institutional data. The Office of Academic Publications provides oversight of the annual GW Bulletin publication, which includes all regulations, courses, and program information. The Office of Academic Planning and Assessment’s mission is to collect, analyze, and interpret data and other relevant information about GW’s academic, administrative, business, and research environment and performance; to transform and contextualize data, analysis, and interpretations into usable information for planning, evaluation, and decision making; and to manage and facilitate the campus learning outcomes assessment process to improve teaching and learning.
Reporting to the Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs, the Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Assessment will provide vision, leadership, and management of institutional data, analysis, and assessment in support of the University’s mission and strategic initiatives. Leveraging institutional data and sophisticated analytical techniques, the incumbent provides critical and trusted support and guidance to a broad range of administrative and decision-making efforts, including institutional data collection and reporting, outcomes assessment, academic program reviews and program planning, strategic planning, and accreditation. The Associate Provost works collaboratively with others in the Office of the Provost and across the institution. The incumbent oversees the offices of Institutional Research and Planning, Survey Research and Analysis, and Assessment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide data, research, and data analysis for the Provost, President, and other senior administrators and constituencies to support the University’s long- and short-time strategic goals and for decision-making.
  • Coordinate efforts for the continuing assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Review and approve program, course, and certificate proposals and changes prior to their inclusion in the bulletin.
  • Manage the academic program review process across schools and proposals for new doctoral programs.
  • Facilitate the collection and archiving of university data including self-studies for academic program reviews.
  • Serve as accreditation liaison officer for Middle States and oversee the university’s accreditation and reporting requirements.
  • Support accreditation processes for professional accreditation programs and departments, as needed.
  • Oversee and manage Academic Analytics for the university and data input and output for AAUDE; sets up protocols and processes and data for university constituents.
  • Determine priorities for analytical projects in consultation with the Provost and other academic units.
  • Interpret research findings and use appropriate methods to report such findings, with particular emphasis on findings that influence institutional decision-making and policy development.
  • Develop, prepare, and deliver multimedia presentations; disseminate regular trend reports to the university community.
  • Represent the university in local and regional research and planning groups; keep abreast of developments in the areas of higher education institutional research, business intelligence, and reporting requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

This is a full-time, in-person position at GW’s Foggy Bottom campus in Washington, D.C., with flexibility and remote work opportunities provided on occasion with supervisor approval.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, Master’s degree, or higher, in a relevant area of study preferred. Relevant experience must include at least 4 years of senior leadership/executive level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

  • Preferred Master’s or PhD degree; and in-depth understanding of research issues and processes, and assessment.
  • Experience in data analysis, strategic or academic planning, decision-support, and understanding of higher education preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, project- planning, and implementation skills, as well as consulting, relationship- building, and strategic- thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a multicultural and diverse environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, public- speaking, and interpersonal skills to interact and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Highly developed presentation skills.
  • Ability to attend to multiple projects simultaneously and determine priorities for staff members.
  • Work independently and as part of a team with little direction in a multi-project, fast-paced environment, and meet concurrent deadlines.
  • Experience with institutional accreditation.
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
