Position Description:

The University of Louisville School of Medicine, affiliated with the Norton Children's Cancer Institute, is seeking a chief of pediatric hematology/oncology. The selected candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience in both academic research and clinical innovation. The chief will have the opportunity to grow the specialty through recruitment and to support faculty in developing innovative programs. The opportunity is both a clinical and faculty position, with responsibility for supervising research, teaching excellence and cutting-edge clinical care.

The chief will have the opportunity to grow the pediatric hematology/oncology research program, including the Children's Oncology Group (COG) program, including through the recruitment of physician scientists. Direction of the research program and mentorship of junior faculty on scholarship could be handled directly by the chief, or indirectly through an assistant division chief or other senior faculty leaders with responsibility for research.

The chief will collaborate with university and hospital partners to create a strategic plan that garners research funding and philanthropic support. This leader will help make the hematology/oncology program a destination of choice for patients, clinicians and scientists in the region.

Additionally, the selected candidate will be skilled at engaging with community stakeholders, creating a team environment where all team members feel engaged with the mission of the program, and building a highly motivated and engaged physician workforce.

As an integrated entity since 2020, UofL School of Medicine and Norton Children's Medical Group, has recruited well over 100 providers; added four new accredited fellowships; increased outreach throughout Kentucky; and increased National Institutes of Health grants, industry-sponsored grants, and registry and trial drug network funding through Norton Children's Research Institute, affiliated with the UofL School of Medicine.

  • Board certification in pediatric hematology/oncology preferred
  • Experience with leading studies and publishing original scholarship in pediatric hematology/oncology
  • Academic credentials that merit appointment at the associate professor or professor level
  • Executive and strategic leadership for the program, in partnership with the chair of pediatrics
  • Responsibility to develop and implement a research plan integrating clinical, translational, basic science and health services research opportunities
  • Opportunity to recruit faculty whose clinical expertise and research interests are consistent with the goals and direction of the program
  • Supervision of clinical training and education for medical students, residents and fellows
  • Management of clinical services while carrying an appropriate clinical load within the specialty
  • Ongoing commitment to building a culture of engagement, team collaboration, and excellence in scholarship, teaching and service
  • Medical degree/diploma
  • Residency/fellowship certification
  • Kentucky medical license or license eligible
