General Description of the Position

The Department of History, Political Science and Philosophy at Delaware State University invites applications for a Tenure-Track Associate Professor appointment in Law Studies for Fall 2023. We are looking for a candidate with a strong record of scholarship and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching within a diverse environment. 

We are especially interested in applicants who can teach myriad courses, including Introduction to Law, Legal Research in Writing, Tort and Personal Injury Law, Civil Litigation, and Evidence and Trial Advocacy. A J.D. is required. In addition, the candidate will actively participate in the department’s advisement and service responsibilities.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the functions essential to performing this job. 

  • Teach survey and upper-level courses in political science 
  • Teach the following existing courses: Introduction to Law, Legal Research in Writing, Tort and Personal Injury Law, Civil Litigation, and Evidence and Trial Advocacy 
  • A plus is a candidate who can also teach Political Science courses or Geography 
  • Adhere to ABA-approved requirements for the Law major 
  • Conduct on-going research for peer-reviewed publications in area of expertise as prerequisite for promotion and tenure 
  • Perform service on university, departmental and community committees 
  • Recruit and Advise students 

  • Other Functions Individuals in this job may be assigned one or more of the following tasks on a rotating or as-needed basis. 
  • Supervision of internship, independent study, and senior capstone 
  • Contribute to department programs, initiatives, and promotion of activities 

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. 1. Relevant teaching experience at the university level 
  • Familiarity with computers 
  • Demonstrate institutional citizenship through active engagement with the department, college, university, public, and professional communities 


  • Qualification Standards

  • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in hand by start of employment 
  • Preferred experience: Several years of university/college level teaching 
  •
