The Department of History at the University of Houston invites applications for the Arab-American Educational Foundation (AAEF) Endowed Chair in Modern Arab History at the advanced associate or full professor level. This is an endowed chair position that provides generous funds to be used by the chair to support research and programs related to Arab history. 
The Endowed Chair will serve as the Director of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Center for Arab Studies. The standard departmental teaching load of 2-2 is reduced to 1-1 for serving as center director. Since its inception in 2018, the Center has become an integral player in the intellectual life of the department, the college, the university, and the city of Houston. The Center prides itself for maintaining an ongoing public engagement with the local Arab community, the Arab American Educational Foundation, and the international scholarly community. The Center hosts some ten to fifteen major events each academic year bringing in scholars from around the world. The Center actively supports a cohort of graduate students working on topics related to the Arab world. Center website: https://uh.edu/class/aaefcas/  

Candidates for the position should be working in the post-1798 time period. Applicants for this position should have fluency in Arabic and English. The research specialization is open, and we welcome a wide range of subfields within Modern Arab History. Candidates should at minimum have received tenure and the rank of associate professor at a comparable institution and should have a professional dedication to teaching, executing an active research agenda, and community engagement. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, and service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. Responsibilities will include teaching graduate courses in modern Arab history, as well as undergraduate courses in the field. 

The successful candidate will join a faculty dedicated to excellence in scholarship and teaching in African, Asian, European, Latin American, Middle East, and U.S. history, across thematic fields that include Global, Transnational, and Borderlands; Popular Culture and Material Culture; Public History and Digital Humanities; Race, Gender, and Society; Radicalism, Civil Rights, and Social Movements; Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine; and War, Revolution, Human Rights, and Politics.  We expect that the successful candidate will have research interests that intersect with and complement departmental strengths. Qualifications

: 

PhD in History or related field
The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of publication and professional service commensurate with appointment to an endowed professorship.
