Associate/Full Professor (History) - African American/African Diaspora

General Description of the Position

The Department of History, Political Science, & Philosophy at Delaware State University invites applications for an Open-Rank appointment in African American and African Diaspora History to begin in the Fall 2023 semester. We are looking for a strong record of scholarship and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching within a diverse environment. We are especially interested in applicants who can teach a range of courses from introductory to graduate courses in African American and African Diaspora history and studies. Additional training in African history would also be a plus. A Ph.D. in History or African American or African Diaspora studies is required by the date of appointment. In addition to a strong and sustained record in scholarship and teaching, the ideal candidate would participate actively in the Department’s advisement and service responsibilities. Some prior administrative experience is also welcomed. 


Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the functions essential to performing this job: 
1. Teach survey courses in history 
2. Teach upper-level courses in African American history, African Diaspora history, and Africana Studies 
3. Conduct on-going research for peer-reviewed publications in area of expertise 
4. Recruit and advise students 
5. Perform service on university, departmental and community committees
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities: 
1. Relevant teaching experience at the university level 
2. Familiarity with computers 
3. Demonstrate institutional citizenship through active engagement with the department, college, university, public, and professional communities


Qualification Standards

1. Education: Ph.D. in History, African Diaspora, African American Studies with a specialization in history required 
2. Required experience: 7-10 years university/college level teaching
