Job Summary
East Tennessee State University seeks a proven academic leader to serve as the Department Chair for the Rehabilitative Sciences Department.
The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences and will provide leadership and department administration as well as participate as a full member of the faculty, with all relevant duties, responsibilities, and benefits. The chairperson provides the vision for the department; advocates for the department’s needs; support faculty members in their teaching, professional development, service, and intellectual contributions; oversees the departmental budget; and provides service and support to varied constituencies (college, university, and outside communities). The position is a 12-month appointment and also carries tenure or tenure-track faculty rank at the associate or full professor level.
The new department chairperson will join a dynamic and growing department and participate in the internationally renowned ETSU IPE Program , focused on interprofessional education and training for the next generation of scholar-practitioners. ETSU is one of only about 100 designated Academic Health Science Centers in the nation and is one of the largest, along with The Ohio State University, with 5 academic health science colleges (medicine, pharmacy, nursing, public health, and clinical & rehab sciences). In addition to our robust academic offerings, ETSU Health proudly serves the people of Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and Western North Carolina. We offer expert primary, specialty, and rehabilitative clinical services.
The Department of Rehabilitative Sciences is a fast-growing, multidisciplinary department with over 30 tenured, tenure-track, clinical, and adjunct faculty and support staff offering a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, undergraduate and graduate programs in Nutrition and Dietetics, a graduate certificate in Sports Nutrition, and a bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitative Health Sciences, and a developing graduate program in orthotics and prosthetics set to launch in 2024.
The Department of Rehabilitative Sciences is located within the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences , which includes numerous programs including Speech and Language Pathology, Audiology, Social Work, and Allied Health Sciences. The College is part of the University’s Academic Health Sciences Division, which also houses the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, the College of Public Health, and the College of Nursing.

Required Qualifications
  • Research doctorate (e.g. PhD, EdD, ScD)
  • Eligible for licensure in TN in one of the disciplines represented in the department, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of six years of higher education experience.
  • Record of teaching, research, and service appropriate to the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Leadership in a higher education setting including experience with external program accreditation, curriculum development, and faculty development.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of three years in an administrative leadership position in higher education (e.g., program director, department chair).
  • Demonstrated track record of success in academic program management including curriculum development, implementation, and achieving (maintaining) successful external program accreditation at undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Demonstration of ability to develop an environment that supports faculty success in securing grants and contracts.
  • Expertise in collaborating with community partners and an interest in leveraging local and regional partnerships.
  • Successful record of, and commitment to, equality of opportunity, and diversity with demonstrated respect and advocacy for faculty, staff, and students.
  • History of demonstrating a collaborative style of leadership, embracing shared governance, and building a culture of trust and confidence with faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
