Associate Faculty Pool, Anthropology (PT Faculty)

LOCATION: Lynnwood Washington

DESCRIPTION: Edmonds College and the Humanities and Social Sciences Division invite applications for an associate faculty Anthropology Instructor with a specialization in American Indian and Indigenous studies. The college seeks faculty who will adapt to a variety of teaching situations, can use technology to teach effectively, and will work effectively with students, staff, and others in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and student success.

Faculty members are responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes to a diverse student body in classroom, lab, and field settings combined with online course management and/or within an online/hybrid model; developing curriculum; preparing teaching materials; developing and assessing student learning outcomes to evaluate student work; assigning grades; maintaining required records; and advising and consulting with students to support their success.

Instructors will be responsible for teaching anthropology courses in one or more of the following areas of specialization: American Indian and Indigenous studies, general survey, cultural anthropology, archaeology, and/or bioanthropology. The instructor will also be responsible for working with Anthropology and Diversity Studies department chairs in the maintenance and ongoing development of the college's program of community-based service-learning with tribal communities (powwow, Tribal Canoe Journey, ethnobotanical garden, Cultural Kitchen, habitat restoration, etc.). Other responsibilities include participation in the following: achievement of the College's mission and goals; upholding the College's values; governance of the College via department and division work; required professional development and college in-service activities (including employee orientation and college compliance trainings); personal and program evaluation. The teaching assignment may include early morning or late afternoon/evening classes and could include online teaching as well.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Arts or Sciences degree in Anthropology, American Indian and Indigenous Studies, Archaeology, Bioanthropology or related discipline with substantive graduate level course work, teaching, and/or research in Anthropology.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community-based service-learning.
  • Minimum of three years experience living and/or working in American Indian and Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Excellent verbal, listening, problem-solving, critical thinking, and writing skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Competence to teach courses with multicultural perspectives in a community college setting with a focus on student learning.
  • Experience implementing community-based archaeological projects and service-learning in American Indian/First Nations.
  • Familiarity with college powwows, Tribal Canoe Journey, ethnobotany, and/or Indigenous food systems.
  • Ability to speak one or more Indigenous languages. Preference given to familiarity with Lushootseed or other languages of the North Pacific Coast.
  • Commitment to an anti-racist and decolonizing pedagogy.
  • Experience with the use of online course management systems, i.e. Canvas.
  • Ability to impart excitement and enthusiasm into teaching.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including a wide range of student preparedness and characteristics.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically performed in a classroom, office, or online from home and requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. The ability to communicate effectively is essential. Instructors are required to use a computer in the work environment. The ability to navigate difficult terrain in field settings is required.

COMPENSATION:

Work schedule is based on an eleven week quarterly schedule and could vary each quarter. Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $5,865.82 at Step A.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
