Position Focus:

Yale University Library seeks an innovative leader to join a newly formed team as the inaugural Associate Director, Research Engagement, and to reenvision research and learning support for the sciences and social sciences. Reporting to the Director, Science and Social Science, the Associate Director provides vision and leadership for six professional staff who support research in science, social science, related professional schools, and interdisciplinary programs. The incumbent will establish and continuously improve the research support service model based on current research practices, grounded in student and faculty academic needs, and aligned to Yale Library strategies. To enable such work, the Associate Director will develop and maintain strong working relationships with administrators, faculty, and students in these areas, taking initiative to identify and meet their expectations for research programs and services.

The incumbent will oversee strategy and operations for research and professional support activities related to the Science and Social Science Group and coach the department to navigate changes in the information and research landscape and better meet user needs. The Associate Director will nurture the development of innovative researcher and practitioner support programs, including novel approaches to research consultations, scholarly profiles and research impact, research data support, building community through common research methods and tools, specialized instruction and outreach, and other research support activities. Activities are offered across multiple library locations, but primarily occur at Marx Science and Social Science Library and the Anne T. & Robert M. Bass Library.

As part of the Science and Social Science management team, the Associate Director, Research Engagement, works collaboratively with the Director and the Associate Director, Learning Engagement, to plan and carry out the work of the group in a team-based environment. Together, this team ensures that research support programs, projects, and spaces are grounded in rich insights of faculty, researcher, and student academic and professional needs, while also supporting interdisciplinary learning and research.

The two Associate Directors work together to triangulate needfinding, implement an assessment and analysis program across the Science and Social Science portfolio, balance workloads and service iteration between Learning Engagement and Research Engagement, and coordinate internal and external communications for the group. The Associate Directors will collaborate to set group and programmatic goals, create a budget, and provide input on functional space programming. In collaboration with colleagues across Yale University Library, and with campus partners, they will deliver programs and services that enable innovative learning, interdisciplinary scholarship, and advance Yale Library’s research and learning program.

Yale University Library serves a diverse staff, campus, local, and global community and is deeply committed to advancing its goals for equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This commitment is reflected in our mission, strategic directions, staff values, initiatives, and scholarly activity. To support our goals for staff recruitment, retention, and development, Yale Library invites applications from candidates whose philosophies align with these commitments and who have demonstrated success with supporting diversity and inclusion through their work, service, research, and/or teaching.
The position will be assigned a rank of Librarian 3 or 4 based on a combination of professional experience and qualifications. Librarian ranking information can be found here: http://bit.ly/YULRanksPromotions
