Position Description


Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
The University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law (McGeorge), invites applications for a faculty position in our Trial Advocacy program, ranked nineth (9th) in the country by US News, as the Associate Director of Trial Advocacy. The position will be on an indefinite term contract-track. (When the successful candidate is hired on an indefinite contract-track, s/he/they will hold the title of Professor of Law, Legal Practice. Professors of Law, Legal Practice of all ranks have voting rights, faculty governance responsibilities, and sabbatical opportunities. Although not a tenure-track position, the post is intended to lead to a long-term contract that, if successfully completed, culminates in an indefinite contract with no term limits and with job security similar to a tenured position).
The Associate Director of Trial Advocacy is primarily responsible for teaching courses in our trial advocacy program and coaching mock trial students. Courses currently offered as part of the program include Trial Advocacy, Mock Trial Evidence, The Art of Plea Bargaining, Expert Witness Testimony, Jury Selection and Taking and Defending Depositions. As part of her/his/their teaching package, the Associate Director of Trial Advocacy may also to teach one or more doctrinal courses, such as Criminal Law, Evidence, or Torts.
Other responsibilities include:
  • Collaborating with the Director of Trial Advocacy in the development of new and innovative courses for the Trial Advocacy program.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Trial Advocacy in development of online and live programs for the trial advocacy community.
  • Assisting the Director of Trial Advocacy with the administration and development of the Mock Trial Program.
  • Participating in running the school’s National Ethics Trial Competition (NETC).
  • Doing scholarly research and writing in relevant fields and participating in the intellectual life of the law school.
  • Committee work as assigned by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Holds a Juris-Doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Has at least three (3) years post-J.D. legal experience, including significant experience as a trial lawyer, criminal or civil.
  • Has experience working with law students or recent law school graduates as a supervisor, mentor, teacher, or instructor.
  • Holds membership in a state bar association.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Has at least three (3) years of experience teaching in a trial advocacy program at a U.S. law school.
  • Has a record of involvement in national and state advocacy organizations such as the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA), Legal Aid Services of California (LAAC), and the National Association of Legal Advocacy Educators (NALAE).
  • Is admitted to the California Bar.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Possesses outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Promotes the vision, mission, and core values of McGeorge School of Law.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Schedule is dependent on the course and department needs.
Hiring Range $110,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
