The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) has been a leader in social work education and research since 1898. As a key contributor to the Advising team, the Associate Director provides one-on-one student support, supports the team's operations, and develops and delivers curricula for various stages of the Master's program, including 16-month advising modules. Reporting to the Director of Advising at the Columbia School of Social Work , the Associate Director of Advising supports the academic and professional trajectory of the students in the Master???s Program. In addition to these duties, the Associate Director is instrumental in shaping the online and residential advising models, ensuring they are well informed about the Master of Social Work curriculum and the school's educational directives.
Responsibilities
- Create and deliver presentations and workshops for students, faculty, and advisors, as well as foster collaborations with other school departments.
- Represent CSSW at interdisciplinary meetings, aiming to synergize efforts that align with the Office of Advising's mission and objectives, and calls for advocacy of the CSSW's advising framework at local and national forums, positioning it as a leader in advisory practices.
- Oversee students' academic progress and maintain records, including academic plans and probation. Foster an environment of educational and professional growth.
- Manage the Office of Advising student appointment scheduling system.
- Provide guidance to students for academic excellence and offer support for personal challenges that could affect their academic or practicum progress. When needed, mediate to address conflicts between students and others.
- Offer academic advising to students in the pre-practicum phase across various programs, including Part-Time, Full-Time, One-year residency, and Five-term international. Assume advisory duties as required.
- Partner with the Office of Practicum Learning, the Office of Student Affairs, and other key stakeholders across CSSW to address student issues that require special attention.
- Assign students to advisors, coordinating with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Practicum Learning, Admissions, and CSSW???s Computing and IT Office to ensure data integrity.
- Recruit, interview, and oversee part-time advisors. Develop and administer orientation and training, incorporating PowerPoint presentations outlining relevant policies and procedures. Ensure advisors receive continual support and guidance.
- Design and coordinate the advisor training curriculum, including educational material and interactive exercises for student seminars.
- Manage advisor staff meeting agendas; represent the advising department at various forums; and oversee the recruitment, training, and mentorship of part-time advisors. Lead meetings as necessary.
- Regularly review and maintain CSSW???s Courseworks - The Office of Advising staff and advisors use the Canvas site.
- Train advisors on how to use Coursework, Stellic, Sonia, and other academic platforms and provide ongoing support.
- Design systems to streamline procedures and protocols for the Office of Advising to optimize clarity and efficiency.
- Work with other departments to streamline policies and procedures so that all departments can be conversant and consistent with messaging.
- Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of all CSSW and University policies and procedures to ensure that students have access to a wide range of resources.
- Connect students with appropriate faculty and academic resources, including the Writing Center, Practicum Learning staff, school administrators, and University resources to provide students with necessary academic, co-curricular, and personal support.
- Administer programming designed to meet students' academic and professional development needs. Develop and facilitate workshops, discussions, and training on a range of topics including time management skills, study track selection, vicarious trauma, self-care, and burnout.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor???s degree and/or equivalent is required.
- A minimum of 3 years of related experience in advising and supervising graduate-level students.
Other Requirements
- Superior time management skills. Ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines while leading multiple concurrent projects with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work with and be supportive of team effort is essential.
- Proven expertise in engaging and supporting students in a graduate setting.
- Working knowledge and experience working from an anti-oppressive framework that incorporates a lens that incorporates tenants of power, privilege, race, and oppression.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in facilitating large groups and ability to be engaging as a public speaker.
- Advanced computer skills in Excel, Word, and creating PowerPoints.
- Advanced expertise in coursework and SSOL and willingness to learn new programs, including Stellic and Sonia.
- Some evening work may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master???s degree in Social Work or related field.
- Experience working for an accredited graduate school of social work.
- Experience supervising staff.
