About the Department
The Genetic Engineering and Society (GES) Center at NC State University serves as an international hub of interdisciplinary research, engaged scholarship and inclusive dialogues surrounding opportunities and challenges associated with genetic engineering and society.
Positioned at the nexus of science and technology, the social sciences and humanities, the GES Center has taken a national and international lead in examining the technical, ethical, and societal dimensions of the products and impacts of biotechnology.
Essential Job Duties
The Associate Director will:
  • Work with multi-sector and inter-disciplinary teams to develop and lead grant applications to foundations and government agencies.
  • Manage the GES external advisory committee.
  • Develop novel communication materials (e.g. blogs and policy briefs) at the nexus of science, policy, technology and society, as well as help to summarize work of other faculty, students, and staff for public audiences.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local, state, and national, and international stakeholder groups.
  • Help to supervise postdocs and graduate students working with GES on outreach, engagement, and policy briefs/reports.
  • Develop and manage events for campus and external audiences (e.g., conferences, workshops, and seminars).

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • PhD in social or natural sciences, policy-related fields or STS, or humanities. 
  • Two plus years of postgraduate experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Ability to work with multi-sector and inter-disciplinary teams to develop and lead grant applications to foundations and government agencies.
  • Management of multi-stakeholder committees
  • Ability to direct events, projects, and workshops
  • Excellent Communication–oral and written skills. Ability to translate scientific and policy issues so they are understandable to the general public.
  • Knowledge of science and technology policy issues surrounding emerging technologies, preferably biotechnology
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading grant applications, research projects, and outreach activities. 
  • Expertise in emerging biotechnologies and societal aspects. 
  • Previous outreach work with policy makers and stakeholders. 
  • Team leadership experience.
