Primary Purpose of Department
The mission of the Office of Identity, Equity and Engagement (IEE) is to engage and support students who hold historically minoritized identities in an effort to enhance a university culture that embraces inclusive excellence. Within this mission, the office will champion efforts for students from historically marginalized and minoritized communities to be seen and celebrated through programs rooted in cultural and social equity. IEE aims to provide affirming and transformative spaces for students to engage, show up as their authentic selves, and form a sense of belonging and mattering at UNC Charlotte.
IEE offers student-focused programs, workshops, and dialogues aimed to educate, develop, and engage students regarding various intersecting identities, providing students with opportunities to critically explore the world and engage in transformative learning experiences.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Director assists in leading the department in creating and sustaining an equitable environment where members of the UNC Charlotte community are welcomed, valued, supported and can show up authentically without systemic barriers. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating IEE programs and training that promote an understanding of and appreciation for the principles of identity, equity, and inclusion among students of the UNC Charlotte community.
The Associate Director will assist the Director in the development and implementation of the vision, strategic plan, and leadership of the Office of Identity, Equity, and Engagement. The office provides students an affirming and equitable environment committed to fostering a campus community that celebrates and supports expansion of identities through holistic development, education and intentional engagement.
In addition, the Associate Director will directly supervise three (3) full-time Assistant Directors and indirectly supervise three (3) graduate assistants. They will foster collaborative relationships with the Student Engagement unit and Student Affairs in fulfilling the organizational mission and vision. The position requires the flexibility, ability, and willingness to work occasional nights and weekends in structured and unstructured settings with students and campus partners. The Associate Director of the Office of Identity, Equity, and Engagement will report to the Director of the Office of Identity, Equity, and Engagement.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Program Development and Implementation (20%)

  • Design, implement and assess yearlong cultural, professional and educationally transformative programming that enhances cultural awareness and diversity appreciation
  • Design, coordinate and implement IEE signature programs focused on community-building based upon assessed student needs and resources available with a focus on student belonging and mattering
  • Collaborate with University partners on efforts to develop community, belonging, and mattering initiatives
  • Create and manage a yearly programmatic calendar with IEE and community signature events, and campus programs
  • Oversee management of identity development (leadership, career, etc.) and provide individual/group mentoring, coaching, and support to marginalized students including making appropriate referrals to campus resources for extended support
  • Serve as a liaison for campus partners to provide collaborative programming and support for major events

Resource and Education (30%)

  • Work collaboratively with IEE Director and staff team to provide administrative leadership in the area of student success for historically marginalized and minoritized students with a focus on efforts that enhance retention and graduation
  • Identify and provide students with information on and access to programming resources both locally and nationally (ex.: identity-based leadership conferences, UNC Charlotte financial resources, best practices/ideas, etc.)
  • Mentor students and serve as a role model, providing support, encouragement, and act as a resource and point of contact for students seeking assistance, including making appropriate referrals to campus resources for extended support
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with campus partners and external community to maintain and expand network that enhances engagement and supports success
  • Use data-driven knowledge to close gaps in initiatives that enhance and positively impacts the student experience and retention
  • Assist in the development and implementation of campus-wide student training experiences, dialogues, educational programs and events for marginalized student populations and majority population allies across campus
  • Stay abreast of national trends, theories, peer institution efforts; continually seek professional development opportunities
  • Partner with other departments to create and implement leadership training programs for marginalized students
  • Advocate for the needs of diverse populations
  • Actively participate in and facilitate dialogue about issues of social justice, inclusion, power, privilege, and oppression in one’s work

Management (35%)
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop semester and yearly office goals and outcomes that fall in line with short and long range strategic planning activities for IEE (Engagement) and work in partnership with other members of the team to fulfill the office’s mission and vision related to support of students who hold historically marginalized and minoritized identities
  • Assist with development of action steps to accomplish office goals in agreement with Department, Division, and University-wide goals and initiatives
  • Budget development and oversight
  • Serve on committees and represent the department at University functions as appropriate
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, coach, and evaluate performance of three full-time Assistant Directors; Graduate Assistants as well as internship/practicum students
  • Identify leadership development, professional development and training opportunities for IEE staff
  • Assist in the creation of staff development and performance plans
  • Lead and establish goals and objectives to foster student sense of belonging and community through engagement and leadership programs and initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Office of Identity, Equity, and Engagement

Assessment (15%)
  • Collect, manage and analyze quantitative and qualitative data related to programming and use to assess participant satisfaction, effectiveness in learning outcomes, attendance, marketing effectiveness, and participant demographics
  • Develop, implement and analyze assessment as directed
  • Assess, evaluate and redesign, when necessary, program offerings by the Office of Identity, Equity and Engagement
  • Develop assessment plan in conjunction with the Director, to evaluate and measure student experiences, successes, and program effectiveness
  • Assess and manage risk effectively in developing and advising programs and services including development of event safety plans
  • Create and maintain assessment and program evaluations with respect to the Office of Identity, Equity, and Engagement’s vision, mission, and objectives
  • Prepare written reports summarizing program evaluations, attendances, and related trends
  • Use available research, best practices, and higher education trends to make recommendations for changes, programming, resources, and services
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Masters Degree in higher education leadership/administration, student personnel, school/student counseling from an accredited institution
  • Four (4) years of progressive leadership experience in designing, coordinating, evaluating, and improving activities, programs, and services related to identity and cultural awareness, educational and/or social justice programming, and leadership program development
  • Demonstrated experience effectively working and establishing rapport with complex, dynamic, and intersectional identities
  • Demonstrated multicultural competencies in working with diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse set of campus and community partners
  • Organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills exhibiting solution-focused thinking
  • Experience in student identity development, advising and creating leadership development opportunities for students and student organizations
  • Budget management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple job requirements
  • Demonstrated experience with various phases of program planning, development, and assessment
  • Demonstrated ability in creating equitable procedures and processes

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Advanced content expertise and knowledge of research findings/best practices
  • 1-3 years of experience in an administrative leadership role with evidence of progression
  • Experience with staff management and supervision
  • Knowledge and experience researching, compiling, and analyzing data, and generating reports
  • Experience in working with historically underrepresented and underserved communities, including mediating, managing, and resolving conflicts
  • Program skills in establishing and implementing short- and long term program goals and objectives
