The Associate Director for Finance and Budget, under the general direction of the Dean and Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, manages the financial activities of the college including budgeting; accounting; grant management; compliance; procurement; accounts payable; and expense and travel management. The Associate Director directly manages a staff of five and provides indirect management to other financial positions in the college. The College of Earth, Life & Health Sciences and the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station consists of eight schools, three academic departments, numerous teaching and research facilities, five research farms, a green house, a marine center, and the University Forests. The college employs over 700 people including faculty, staff, and students and has a base budget in excess of $30 million. The college also brings in significant external funding, including annually appropriated capacity grants with unique compliance and reporting requirements. Typical hiring range for this position is $72,000 to $77,250 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required:

  • Typically has a minimum education associated with a BA/BS degree with an emphasis in accounting or business, plus at least five years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and accounting practices and principles.
  • Experience with procurement and expense management.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent technical skills including the use of file sharing systems, Excel, query tools and databases.
  • Experience working with financial applications.
  • High level of motivation and the ability to exercise independent judgment and set priorities in a fast paced and demanding environment.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience providing high quality customer service.
  • Supervisory experience with the ability to mentor and provide direction to junior staff, students, and departmental contacts.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Previous work at a university.
  • Experience with grants.
