The Associate Dean for the Social Sciences and Graduate Programs provides support for the Dean of Loyola College of Arts and Sciences and has administrative oversight over the College’s Social Science departments and related programs, including Communication and Media, Political Science, Psychology, Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, Sociology, and ROTC/Military Science. The Associate Dean also supports all graduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, including graduate programs in Psychology, Speech, Emerging Media, Forensic Sciences, Data Science and Theological Studies, and oversees the College’s Global Studies and Pre-Law undergraduate programs.
Working closely with the Dean, the Associate Dean for the Humanities, and the Associate Dean for Natural and Applied Sciences, and other staff and administrators in the dean’s office, the Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Graduate Programs assists with division/department/program visioning; strategic planning; supporting new initiatives for departments/programs; curricular management, including scheduling and staffing; faculty and staff hiring, development, and evaluation; student learning assessment; and adherence to University and College policies and procedures. The Associate Dean also represents Loyola College, the Dean’s Office, and Academic Affairs at a range of administrative and governance meetings, including and especially those related to graduate education (e.g., Graduate Enrollment Committee, Graduate Council). This position may have direct supervisory responsibilities of dean’s office staff, depending on the supervisory experience of the person hired. Associate Deans typically teach one course per year for their home department.
Specific responsibilities appear below:
• Serve as dean’s office point-of-contact to enhance synergy across assigned departments, to provide general support for chairs, and to offer consultation and direction in matters related to policy, procedures, and practices within departments, the College, and across the University.
• Serve as a liaison between department chairs and the Dean (and, when appropriate, Academic Affairs and other units across the University) to facilitate curricular innovation and management, affiliate-faculty hiring, student-learning assessment and program review, and faculty and staff mentoring/development.
• Working closely with the Associate Vice President for Graduate Academic Affairs and the Dean, coordinate, monitor and support all graduate programs within the College, including managing enrollment projections, assessing curricular and market trends, and providing support for program development, review, and accreditation.
• Assist chairs with affiliate faculty recruitment, hiring, contract review/approval.
• Assist chairs and program directors with student-learning assessment design, data collection and analysis, and use of data for curricular improvement.
• Assist chairs and program directors with curricular management, including course scheduling and planning.
• Support faculty development in the areas of teaching, research, and service.
• Assist chairs and the Dean in assessing the performance of appropriate faculty, providing input for annual review, mid-term review, and tenure and promotion.
• Support strategic planning for assigned departments, collaborating with the appropriate administrators on matters of undergraduate education, especially the core curriculum.
• Represent Loyola College, the Dean’s Office, and Academic Affairs at a range of administrative and governance meetings, providing input and ensuring that academic initiatives are consistent with the vision, mission and strategic plan of the College and the University.
• Approve chair reviews of annual performance for administrative staff.
• Assess proposals and manage requests for funding from divisional-development fund, including supporting the social sciences research assistantship and fellowship program.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
• Attend/participate in training needed to succeed in administrative role.
• Teach one course per year.
Required Qualifications
Doctoral degree in a social science discipline
Minimum of 5-8 years of work-related experience
At least 4 years of relevant academic administrative experience
Successful experience as a department chair or director of a large program
Demonstrated success / achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service
Familiarity with university and college policies, procedures, practices, and resource.
Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
Demonstrated ability to facilitate, delegate, and build consensus
Demonstrated complex-problem solving abilities

Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity or direct experience with graduate clinical training
Passion for the social sciences and Loyola’s graduate educational mission
Tenured faculty status strongly preferred
