South Dakota State University’s (SDSU) vision is to dramatically increase its impact through research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA).  Goals for RSCA in the University’s newly approved strategic plan, Pathway to Premier 2030, are accordingly high. Specifically, SDSU is pursuing a pathway to achieve designation as an R1 Research University by Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Increasingly visible RSCA in SDSU’s colleges will attract students wanting to learn from the best and sponsors wanting to invest where they can make a difference.  Achieving this kind of growth calls for focused and intentional leadership within and between colleges. 
 
The College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions at South Dakota State University is seeking applicants for an Associate Dean for Research.  This position is responsible for the administration and management of all aspects of research within the College. This person is a member of the College’s Executive Team, reporting to the Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, and will receive an academic appointment within one of the College’s three Departments.  This is a 12-month, full-time, benefit-eligible, non-faculty exempt position and is located in Brookings, South Dakota.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Associate Dean for Research is responsible for developing a coordinated strategy for focused research in the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. This person will serve as a lead contact representing the College to external research agencies and labs, and as a liaison to the SDSU Office of Research and Economic Development and leadership counterparts across the university.
 
As Associate Dean for Research, expectations are based on these approximate percentages of responsibilities:
  • (70%) Leadership of research initiatives within the College.
  • (25%) Instruction to support the academic programs of the College.
  • (5%) Service contributions to the College, University, and professional discipline.

 
SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF DUTIES:
  • Lead contributor and spokesperson for development and evolution of the college’s bold and creative vision for RSCA and economic development.  
  • Lead and support the college’s leadership team to implement the college’s RSCA and economic development vision and plan for growth, including collaborating to define measurements, to align positions, to recruit, hire, review, and retain heads, directors, and faculty, and to deploy the college’s RSCA resources for optimal effectiveness.
  • Build strong relationships with sponsors and partners, and with potential sponsors and partners, for RSCA and lead college leadership, faculty, and staff in participating in those relationships.
  • Lead development of multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary teams involving faculty of the college.  
  • Engage fully as a member of the university-wide RSCA leadership team (comprising the Division of Research and Economic Development and the University Research Council) to creatively craft trans-collegial strategies and effective university RSCA policies and practices.
  • Continuously learn and understand the research and practice landscape of the departmental disciplinary areas. 
  • Promote the scholarship of teaching and learning. 
  • Systematizing post-award management across departments. 

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Terminal degree in discipline, including PhD or PharmD., by date of application.
  • At least five years of experience as a faculty member in basic sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacy, or other health science discipline.
  • A record of academic and scholarly achievements commensurate with the academic rank of associate or full professor per department standards and BOR policy requirements. 
  • Strong record of leading high-level funded university research.
  • Experience working with faculty and staff to secure the funding needed to support and expand a research program. 
  • Recognized nationally or internationally in their field.
  • Documented experience of effective leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead high performing and creative teams.
  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire and willingness to travel.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to assess outcomes of initiatives.  
  • Experience developing and implementing a strategic plan around RSCA
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.  
  • Ability to mentor faculty and staff members.
