The School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences (SANS), University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), seeks applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for 1890 Research Programs and Associate Director of UMES Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The UMES Agricultural Experiment Station underpins UMES Food and Agriculture Research Programs which is a central part of the university’s land grant mission. These research programs are critical in supporting Maryland’s food and agricultural industries. The UMES­AES programs also provide opportunities for graduate and undergraduate student research and experiential learning. The programs are supported by both state and federal funds, and a diverse array of extra­mural funds.
This position is critical in providing administrative support for the UMES-­AES, and ensuring compliance with both federal and state requirements. The UMES­-AES comprises various laboratories on campus as well as the UMES Research and Education Farms both on and off­ campus. This position is envisaged as a tenured faculty with a 0.5 FTE Administrative and 0.5 FTE research commitment with SANS.
Responsibilities
The Associate Dean for 1890 Research Programs and Associate Director of UMES Agricultural Experiment Station will report to the Dean and Director of Land Grant Programs. Together with the dean they will be responsible for the effective and efficient management of the UMES­-AES including activities funded with capacity funds including Evans-­Allen, McIntire Stennis and the associated state matching funds, as well as research funded through under other extra­mural funds within the AES. The Associate Dean will mentor and support faculty and doctoral students associated with the AES to develop grant applications to support their work. The candidate will work closely with UMES Extension as well as the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station and University of Maryland Extension. The Associate dean will establish linkages with relevant public and private sector entities involved in food and agricultural research.
Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Providing statewide leadership and support for agriculture, natural resources, and interrelated human systems research programs that address the mission the UMES, SANS and AES.
  • Collaboration and linkage with the UMES Extension and University of Maryland Extension to support UMES’ land grant mission.
  • Ensuring that research­ related activities are compliant with College and University ­level policies for the responsible conduct of research as well as federal and state policies and procedures related to research.
  • Providing oversight and/or prepares relevant federal and state mandated reports in concert with the UMES Extension leadership.
  • Reviewing proposals and reports from faculty within the AES prior to submission to USDA.
  • Providing oversight for the maintenance and management of the AES facilities including Research and Education Farms.
  • Assisting faculty in forming successful collaborative research groups.
  • Providing support for targeted investments in faculty research programs by capacity fund-based research programs, building faculty success at all career stages.
  • Attending meetings with state and federal agencies pertinent to the AES.
  • Expanding research partnerships with industry.
  • Promoting cross­cutting, interdisciplinary research efforts that integrate science across all of SANS departments and other schools at UMES.
  • Represents the Dean at UMES, industry, agency, and regulatory functions as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • The candidate will have credentials to be appointed in a tenured track faculty position in one of the Departments of Agriculture, Food and Resources Sciences.
  • A well-established record of scholarship, funded research, administrative experience, and a dedication and interest in, research in the food and agricultural areas.
  • Evidence of development of productive collaborative partnerships across academic units, and professional, public service and outreach units
  • Demonstrated ability to nurture the development of others.
  • Ability to take on new responsibilities and work effectively in an environment of change and ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated ability to support the development of undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and work effectively with external constituencies and stakeholders including public and private organizations.
  • Experience managing teams.
