Position Qualification


Position Summary
Associate Dean responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for library units.
  • Provides oversight and guidance for unit’s annual budget and expenditures.
  • Provides oversight and performance reviews of unit faculty and staff.
  • Conducts timely performance assessments, including annual evaluations.
  • Participates in strategic planning for units and the library.
  • Leads library-wide assessment and evaluation initiatives.
  • Assists in development of library policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the library’s staff development program.
  • Maintains oversight of the library’s support for UNMC academic program accreditation.
  • Assists with facilities management.
  • Assists with recruiting and onboarding new library faculty and staff.
  • Supports and mentors faculty in grant writing and publication.
  • Assists with donor relations efforts and advancement priorities.
  • Fosters interactions within the University of Nebraska and library users.
  • Engages in inclusive, meaningful interactions to build a cohesive unit within the library.
  • Represents the library nationally. Serves as a liaison with other health sciences library leaders to ensure high quality programming and constituent support.
  • Serves on committees and working groups of the McGoogan Library and UNMC.
  • Other projects as assigned.

  • Faculty responsibilities:

    • Teaching Responsibilities
      • Provides instruction on retrieval and critical evaluation of biomedical information.
      • Develops web-based tutorials, workshops, and classroom programs to promote information literacy.
    • Research Responsibilities
      • Engages in academic, instructional, and professional service activities.
      • Works to expand the knowledge base of the field through relevant research and publications.
    • Administration and Service
      • Provides literature searches and instruction in end-user searching of the health sciences literature using databases such as MEDLINE.
      • Serves as liaison to a college or institute.
      • Provides support for scholary communications and efficient use of research resources.
      • Represents the library internally and externally; serves on committees and working groups of the McGoogan Library and UNMC.
      • Other projects as assigned.

    The above and other duties and responsibilities shall be subject to the direction of the Library Dean and modified at their reasonable discretion.
    Required Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
    • Administrative and supervisory experience in an academic or health sciences library. 
    • Demonstrated leadership qualities, including a participatory leadership style that fosters respect and collegiality; strong managerial skills; ability to be creative, to take appropriate risks, and make timely decisions. 
    • Experience providing instruction and research support in an academic health sciences library.
    • Excellent public presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
    • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and how they relate to the mission of the McGoogan Health Sciences Library.
    Supplemental Qualifications
    • Ability to advocate for and manage financial resources.
    • Experience developing external funding opportunities.
    • Experience developing library-led programming or outreach-focused efforts.
    • Experience providing library services for hospital affiliates.
    • Knowledge of collections and scholarly communication issues within the health sciences.
    • Knowledge of special collections, archives, or museums in an academic setting.
    • Demonstrated record of scholarly activities and participation in service equivalent to rank.
