Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Chemistry currently has 27 full-time faculty members with interests that span the traditional fields of chemistry (analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical) with numerous cross-cutting collaborations with faculty from the Departments of Biology, Physics, Psychology, and the Brody School of Medicine. We are a student-centered department that offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Chemistry), two Bachelor of Science degrees (B.S. Chemistry and B.S. Biochemistry (Chemistry Concentration)), a Masters of Science degree, and a Doctoral Program (Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry). The Department of Chemistry has about 200 majors currently. The department has a strong history of high-quality teaching and mentoring, recognized with numerous teaching awards, and a strong profile in professional development, workforce development and best educational practices.
Job Duties
The Department of Chemistry at East Carolina University seeks applications to fill a position as Associate Chair. This position is for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, with the possibility of subsequent appointments.
Duties:
a. As delegated by the Chair, representing the department in its relations with the University administration, Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, other units of the University, and the community.
b. Developing class schedules and help assigning teaching responsibilities to qualified faculty members and teaching assistants in consultation with the Chair, Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, and the lab coordinators for general and organic chemistry.
c. In consultation with the Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies, monitor enrollments and propose adding/closing sections as needed.
d. Supporting departmental and institutional assessment efforts and reporting.
e. Assist the Chair in mentoring and supporting faculty in their scholarship, career progression, and pursuit of funding. Assist the Chair in mentoring and supporting faculty in their teaching and coordinating peer teaching evaluations.
f. Participate with the Chair in long-range strategic planning for the department with advice and feedback from the Executive Committee.
g. Assist the Chair in fostering an environment supportive of equity and diversity, and one that encourages the fair treatment of all faculty, staff and students.
h. Attend meetings of the Executive Committee, serving as a voting ex-officio member in the absence of the Chair.
i. Assist the chair in preparing the departmental Annual Report.
j. Assumes, with approval by the Dean, the Department Chair’s responsibilities in the Chair’s absence.
k. Additional duties, as assigned by the Department Chair, which could include but are not limited to:
a. Oversees the department graduation ceremony preparations.
b. Assists with various data collection for the College spreadsheets (e.g. educational technology needs, space utilization, etc.)
c. Assists with preparing the annual budget allocations.
d. Works with the lead admin to develop a departmental repository of documents from personnel files to budget tracking.
