Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of English (english.ecu.edu) is one of sixteen departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University. It is a vibrant and research-active unit that offers four degrees: a B.A. in English; B.S. in Professional Writing and Information Design; an M.A. in English; and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Professional Communication.
East Carolina University (www.ecu.edu), a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University and enrolls around 29,000 students, with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 90, 000), which lines 90 miles east of Raleigh and 80 miles from the Atlantic coast.
Job Duties
The duties of the Associate Chair include but are not limited to:
• Drafts the department’s class schedules in consultation with the Chair, the other officers, the area coordinators, and the faculty.
• Collects and reports class enrollments to the department.
• Prepares a detailed annual report; uses the enrollment and program needs-driven, evidence-based approach in the 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000-level and graduate course planning to provide executive committee with the data needed to make informed decisions.
• Works with area coordinators to prepare future course rotations that balance the enrollment data with programmatic needs.
• Serves as a liaison between IPAR and faculty members conducting assessments for our various programs.
• Assumes, with approval by the Dean, the Department Chair’s responsibilities in the Chair’s absence.
The Associate Chair assumes additional duties, as assigned by the Department Chair, such as the following:
• Assists the department graduation ceremony preparations.
• Assists with various data collection for the College spreadsheets (e.g., educational technology needs, temp fixed-term faculty/buyout sheets, etc.).
• Assists with preparing the annual budget allocations.
• Assists with the development of a structured faculty mentoring system for the department.
• Assists with the English Code revision process.

Minimum Education/Experience
Must currently hold tenure and the rank of associate or full professor in the Department of English.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience preparing semester schedules for a large academic department.
