Job Summary/Basic Function:

This senior-level management position oversees the strategic communications and brand advancement arm within the external affairs division of the athletics department. This person is responsible for leading Athletics’ efforts to advance Boise State’s national brand through innovative content strategies, brand advancement campaigns, creative services, storytelling, and strategic media relations. This role will work directly with leading the external affairs leadership team, senior staff, and Broncos United to create and execute impactful, multi-faceted campaigns resulting in a larger and more diverse brand advancement strategy associated with the department’s What’s Next Initiative.

Level Scope:

Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Manages experienced professionals who exercise latitude and independence in assignments. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and campus-wide goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls with a focus on policy and strategy implementation. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets and requires practical knowledge in leading and managing the execution of processes, projects and tactics within one area.

Essential Functions:
  • Enhance ROI on existing marketing, advertising and sales strategies in conjunction with external affairs department.
  • Coordinate the internal and external promotion of newly created developments and partnerships.
  • Work with a strategic communications team to measure and improve share of voice and sentiment in key markets.
  • Provide leadership and direction to all facets of strategic communications and brand advancement departments within the athletics external affairs division, including live video production, post-video production, graphic design, strategic communications, and media relations.
  • Advise the athletics department senior staff, including the Senior Associate AD, External Affairs and Director of Athletics on all communication and branding initiatives.
  • Assist in curating correspondence for the Director of Athletics, including speeches, notes, etc. for public events, and for internal and external communication.
  • Work with external and internal units to develop and implement efficient communication methods to advance the reputation, visibility, and understanding of the department as a whole.
  • Work closely with all facets of Boise State Athletics’ external affairs team to create and execute digital content and communication strategies to grow the Bronco Athletics brand, amplify athletic events and programs, and broaden outreach to all current and potential constituents (students, parents, staff, alumni, and community) in support of athletics.
  • Use analytics to create and make data-driven strategies and decisions to enhance sales and revenue generation opportunities.
  • Interact and work with other University departments and external agencies to increase public awareness and support for the athletics department.
  • Serve as a member of the Athletic Department's senior staff and be a Sport Program Administrator to support and oversee team/s as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Use consultative skills with an ability to ask guiding questions that lead to best practices for data analysis and actionable follow-through
  • Project management skills demonstrating strong conceptual and analytical skills, planning abilities, and sound judgment.
  • Prioritize and handle multiple, complex, demanding projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate issues effectively with administrators, boosters, campus and community partners and to explain technical concepts in non-technical terms to stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Analyze situations and resources to identify and recommend solutions leading to new methods of revenue generation and fan engagement..
  • Work within a team, deal with ambiguity, manage fast-paced change, and to contribute what is needed to achieve project goals.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Seven (7) years experience, including 3 years managerial experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) years experience in communications or public relations.
  • Five (5) years experience at an NCAA Division 1 athletic program and/or a professional sports organization or related field, in digital strategy, marketing, revenue generation, communications or a related field preferred.
