Minimum Position Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area and seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in campus safety and security or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the required education. Master’s degree preferred.

Additional Position Information
The Assistant Vice President, Campus Safety and Security reports to the Executive Vice President and COO/CFO and is a member of the Business & Finance Leadership Team responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the university campus community, including students, faculty, staff and visitors. This role will provide strategic leadership, management, and oversight for all departments and functions related to campus safety. The AVP directs staff in identifying, developing, implementing, and maintaining security processes, practices, and policies throughout the organization to reduce risks, respond to incidents, and limit exposure and liability while also maintaining relationships with high-level officials in law enforcement to include, local, state, national and international agencies and private sector counterparts.

Job Duties


Duties & Responsibilities
Oversees the administration of Campus Safety and Security for all campus activities, ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and audit responses while adhering to all University policies and procedures. Provides strategic leadership and vision and sets goals and objectives for areas under its responsibility. Reviews crime statistics for the University and reports them to the TN Bureau of Investigation via (TBIRS) and Department of Education (Clery Act) in collaboration with the Chief of Police. Provides follow-up information of incidents and crimes to the university executive team. Reviews, updates, and makes recommendations for safety and security policies.

Conducts research on future safety and security needs with respect to the University’s environment to develop long-term Strategic Plans and short-term Action Plans to respond to emerging safety concerns. Estimates necessary staffing and additional resources required for near-term/ad-hoc projects and for long-term/permanent programs.

Establishes goals and objectives for the department and ensures they are met. Manages the department’s budget and allocates resources effectively. Fosters a positive organizational culture and promotes teamwork and collaboration.

Ensures the enforcement of laws and regulations within the jurisdiction. Develops and implements crime prevention strategies and community policing initiatives. Responds to emergencies and critical incidents, and provide leadership during crisis situations.

Monitors and analyzes crime data and other relevant information to identify areas for improvement and develop effective strategies.

Attends community meetings, events, and forums to address concerns and build trust. Collaborates with community organizations, schools, and businesses to promote public safety and crime prevention.
Acts as a liaison between the police department and community stakeholders.

Public Relations and Media Management:
Serves as the spokesperson for police services and effectively communicates with the media. In collaboration with the Sr. VP of Marketing and Communications, manages public relations efforts and addresses public inquiries or concerns. Provides accurate and timely information to the media and the public during critical incidents or emergencies. Represents police services in meetings, conferences, and public events.
