Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) oversees, develops, supports, and grows UNC-Chapel Hill’s $1 billion research enterprise. The offices reporting to the OVCR set strategic priorities for research, manage proposals and awards, provide research infrastructure, identify funding opportunities, develop research teams and partnerships, oversee regulatory compliance, and communicate the impact and value of the University’s research enterprise. The OVCR enables research endeavors for faculty, students, and scholars; encourages interdisciplinary research collaboration across campus; and fosters expansion and diversification of the University’s sponsored research portfolio by collaborating with foundations, federal agencies, corporations, and the state and federal governments. The Vice Chancellor for Research also oversees multiple pan-University, multidisciplinary research centers and institutes.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) seeks a dynamic and collaborative Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Development (AVC). Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research, the AVC provides vision and leadership in the area of research development and will oversee the Office of Research Development within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR). The Office of Research Development (ORD) exists to expand the University’s capacity for innovative, groundbreaking research and supports Carolina researchers pursuing convergence science and a culture of innovation by providing several key resources that enhance grant proposal competitiveness. ORD facilitates project ideation, resource identification, and multidisciplinary team formation to enhance UNC’s competitiveness in securing funding for research and scholarly projects. Additionally, ORD accelerates UNC’s success in obtaining extramural funding through proposal development activities and facilitates relationships with regional and national partners and funding agencies for the research community.
The AVC serves as the University’s Research Development Officer and will provide strategic oversight for and coordination of institutional research development programs. The AVC is responsible for management and leadership of ORD, identifying areas for growth for the research enterprise at UNC and playing a leading role in working with the VCR to set and implement the strategic direction for research development across campus. This position serves as an expert and point of contact for advice, resources, education, and coordination of research development.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The successful candidate will have:
* At least 7 years of relevant experience.
* Extensive professional experience in research administration and/or research development.
* Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex issues both verbally and in writing.
* Ability to work independently on multiple issues concurrently and to exercise independent judgment in establishing priorities.
* Must exhibit exceptional leadership qualities including strong organizational skills, highly effective interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, and analytical skills.
* Strong collaborate style and skills and a team orientation are essential to success in this position. Experience driving consistency of administration in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Ten or more years of relevant experience.
* Knowledge of university research policies, federal and non-federal policies, regulations, and processes.
* Previous experience in educating, communicating with, and supporting faculty researchers and staff in an academic environment.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
