Position Overview

Perform research and analysis of radio and millimeter-wavelength observations of molecular gas in the center of the Milky Way in order to better understand the star formation, gas motions, and evolution of this region.

Applications are invited for a post-baccalaureate research associate positions in observational radio and millimeter astronomy in the research group of professor Elisabeth Mills at the University of Kansas beginning as early as May 26, 2024 (the start date is negotiable and may be as late as December 2024). Successful candidates will work on the calibration of radio and millimeter data from surveys of the Galactic center, the creation of science-ready survey data products, and will contribute to a continuum catalog by developing procedures for source characterization and measuring gas temperatures. Preference will be given to those candidates with previous experience working with radio or millimeter data, but this is not a requirement for this position.

This is a limited term position (12 months), and is contingent upon funding.

Job Description

25% Calibrate new interferometric

  • Calibrate new interferometric data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array observatory and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array focusing on a two large surveys of the Milky Way’s center (ACES and JACKS).

25% Perform imaging
  • Perform imaging of ACES and JACKS survey data, including combining data taken in different ALMA array configurations.

25% Conduct a joint analysis
  • Conduct a joint analysis of radio and millimeter continuum maps.
  • Construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) which decompose emission from free-free (ionized gas) and dust (molecular gas) emission in order to make an accurate measurement of the total molecular gas column density

15% Research preparation
  • Prepare publications and presentations on the results of this work.

10% Processing data
  • Gather and minimally process archival radio and millimeter data of the Milky Way Galactic center.
