Position Summary/Purpose of Position: | An opening for a Professional Track Research Faculty role (Assistant Research Scientist or Assistant Research Engineer) within the Department of Mechanical Engineering is available and will be guided jointly by two PIs: Dr. Ryan Sochol of the Bioinspired Advanced Manufacturing (BAM) Lab and Dr. Mark Fuge of the Informatics for Design, Engineering, and Learning (IDEAL) Lab. This position is intended for experienced researchers looking to build a long-term career in professional academic research and take on a significant management and leadership role. The BAM Lab conducts research into micro/nanoscale additive manufacturing or “3D printing” strategies that advance the life sciences and biomedical applications and the IDEAL Lab conducts research at the intersection of Machine Learning and Applied Mathematics with Engineering and Design. This position would represent a scientific leadership position on a jointly funded project in collaboration with the Army Research Lab as part of UMD’s newly created Joint Research Laboratory, and would also position the researcher access to a broad base of collaborators and opportunities from which to launch and build their own research enterprise. Some specific duties include: ● Working with multidisciplinary teams of researchers (e.g., engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, and domain specialists) to design and carry out research, primarily at the intersection of Additive Manufacturing, Micro/nanosystems, Engineering Design, and Machine Learning. ● Producing high-impact research in support of publications or proposals. ● Reviewing and synthesizing existing literature to inform new proposal directions or whitepapers for federal agencies. ● Working with and training faculty research assistants, post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduate assistants in various. additive manufacturing techniques. ● Directing and conducting data collection and analysis efforts. ● Preparing presentations, reports, funding proposals, and scholarly publications related to research and communicating those deliverables to internal or external sponsors. The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland serves as the catalyst for high-quality research, innovation, and learning, preparing our students to create innovations that will address the 21st century Grand Challenges (e.g., energy, environment, security, and human health) and improve the human condition. The Clark School is dedicated to leading and transforming the engineering discipline and profession, to accelerating entrepreneurship, and to transforming research and learning activities into new innovations that benefit millions. |
