Position title: Assistant Project Scientist
Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 37B for the salary range at UCSB. A reasonable estimate for this position at 100% time is $73,300- $89,300. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Anticipated start: Spring 2024 or later

Position description
A position as an Assistant Project Scientist is available in the Earth Research Institute and the Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The successful candidate will participate in a research project led by Professor Leila Carvalho (http://clivac.eri.ucsb.edu ). The successful candidate needs to have expertise in the following fields: a) boundary layer in mountain areas in coastal environments, b) downslope windstorms, c) regional modeling in complex terrain using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, and d) experience in organizing and managing field collection datasets. Experience in maintenance of meteorological flux towers is highly desired.
The successful candidate will be primarily involved in analyzing data from the Sundowner Winds Experiment (SWEX) Field Campaign, including performing high-resolution WRF experiments. Research tasks will include testing and validating WRF simulations and integrating results from multiple platforms.
The position is a full-time research position under supervision of Drs. Leila Carvalho and Charles Jones. It offers competitive salary and benefits. The initial appointment is for one year. Continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and availability of funding. The ideal starting date for the position is April 2024. The Department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
All requirements for Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field, except the dissertation, at the time of application.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, or a closely related field is required by time of appointment.
Preferred qualifications
Strong experience running the WRF model, Linux environment and programming skills. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Appointees should have experience working independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Previous postdoctoral experience (less than 5 years) is also encouraged.
