Assistant Program Director of Physical Therapy

Position Summary:

The Assistant Program Director of Physical Therapy is a full-time, twelve-month faculty appointment reporting directly to the Program Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program in the Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences. The performance of this core faculty position will be evaluated based on the expectations outlined In the Faculty Manual for faculty on the academic track. The position is considered exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, classified as FI.

The principal responsibilities of a full-time faculty member at the University of Charleston are outlined in the faculty position description published as an appendix in the Faculty Manual and include teaching, scholarship, professional development, and service to the institution. Fulfillment of these responsibilities may involve weekend, evening, off-campus, and online activities as assigned. This position may be considered for remote candidates, but periodic travel to Charleston, WV, will be required.

The Assistant Program Director of Physical Therapy primary responsibilities will be to coordinate the pain science curricular theme, serve as the admissions committee chair, teach assigned courses, maintain an active and productive research agenda, and serve the university, community, and profession.

Essential Responsibilities:

Additional duties, specific to the physical therapy program and expectations for faculty success by the Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences include, but are not limited to:

  • Teach a 50% load
  • Provide instructional support for academic programs as assigned, including leading the pain science curricular program theme
  • Develop and deliver courses in-seat or online as assigned
  • Assess student learning and contribute to program assessment
  • Fulfill all functions of a full-time faculty member as defined in the faculty manual, including participation in service to the University, professional development, and innovative teaching
  • Hold office hours
  • Participate in program, school, and faculty assembly meetings, graduation exercises, honors ceremonies, and Faculty Institute as requested
  • Perform duties relating to academic advising and mentoring
  • Support recruitment and retention initiatives within the Bert Bradford School of Health Sciences and across the University
  • Update and maintain one’s personnel action file (PAF), including annual performance appraisals, teaching evaluations, and peer classroom/online teaching observations
  • Serve as the responsible party for the program in the scheduled or unscheduled absence of the Program Director
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications (Required):

  • Earned PhD or terminal academic equivalent
  • Earned degree in physical therapy
  • Hold an active unrestricted license as a physical therapist in an appropriate US jurisdiction
  • Have experience in a direct access clinical practice to include at least primary care, diagnostic imaging, and pharmacology privileges
  • Recognized as a Therapeutic Pain Specialist (TPS) or equivalent
  • Developed productive research agenda
  • Experienced in physical therapy admissions
  • Have at least 3-years’ teaching experience in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program
  • Experienced in course development, curriculum development, and program assessment
  • Experienced in distance education or equivalent

Qualifications (Preferred):

  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate or Professor rank
  • Earned Doctor of Physical Therapy clinical degree
  • Recognized as Board Certified Specialist recognized by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS)
  • Developed research agenda specific to pain sciences
  • Previous uniformed service.
