Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Department of Behavioral and Community Health, School of Public Health, University of Maryland, College Park seeks outstanding candidates for a nine-month, full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor to join a dynamic, interdisciplinary department with behavioral science, health promotion intervention, implementation science, and community-engaged research programs. This candidate will help the Department further enhance its national leadership at the forefront of research, education, and service on community and population health. We particularly welcome applicants with a strong background in public health and/or social and behavioral sciences and substantial expertise and training in quantitative methods and analysis, specifically, biostatistics in behavioral science research. We will also consider applications in other areas of quantitative methods, analysis, and research. The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) develop, conduct, and sustain a portfolio of externally-funded research; (2) teach, mentor and advise a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students, and (3) support and expand the Department’s research, teaching, practice, and service initiatives. The Department of Behavioral and Community Health offers a B.S. in Community Health, an Accelerated B.S./M.P.H. program, a M.P.H in Behavioral and Community Health (both residential and online programs) and a Ph.D. in Behavioral and Community Health (https://sph.umd.edu/academics/departments - units/department-behavioral-and-community-health) . The Department’s mission is to promote and protect the health and well-being of all people and communities throughout Maryland, the nation, and the world through innovative, theory-based research and discovery. Ultimately, the aim is to eliminate racial, ethnic and social injustices and transform public health research, practice, and training to prepare the next generation of practitioners, researchers, and leaders in social and behavioral sciences. The department has both tenure- and professional-track faculty engaged in research across many aspects of population health, including but not limited to: health behavior; health inequities among underrepresented populations; intervention development and evaluation; community-engaged research; and implementation science. The department of Behavioral and Community Health has faculty, staff, and students engaged in research on many topics including; cancer prevention, screening, and cancer-related health disparities; substance use; tobacco control and tobacco regulatory science; digital health; health communication and health literacy; global health; mental health; community-engaged research; intervention development; implementation science; multi-level health outcomes; and urban health. The department also houses a number of centers including a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center, the Center on Young Adult Health and Development, as well as several investigator-led labs. To this end, the department of Behavioral and Community Health features a robust infrastructure for conducting observational and interventional studies. This includes strong partnerships with other institutions in the University of Maryland System, numerous pilot research funding opportunities, and administrative support for grant submissions and post-award management. Additional resources include diverse networks of community partners and institutional initiatives supporting cross-campus and transdisciplinary collaboration.

Candidates for this position must meet the following minimum requirements: must hold an earned doctorate degree (Ph.D., DrPH, Sc.D.) or equivalent in public health, behavioral science, health education and promotion, biostatistics or statistics, epidemiology, human development, psychology, sociology, demography, or related social or health science field conferred and received from an appropriately accredited institution. The candidate must demonstrate experience or the strong potential as an independent investigator with current or future success in the procurement of extramurally funded research studies, a record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications, and a portfolio of scientific presentations at national and international conferences. Equally important, the candidate must demonstrate teaching excellence (or a promising record of) specifically with quantitative research methods and data analysis, biostatistics, or statistics courses at the graduate and/or undergraduate level, engage in service activities (e.g., mentorship of students), and expertise in developing collaborative research initiatives with community partners. Candidates must also possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Finally, the candidate must have a professional record that is consistent with the Department’s commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
