Job Summary
The Department of Environmental Studies (ENVS) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a tenure track appointment at the Assistant Professor level in the area of environmental pollution and human health with an emphasis on underserved and disproportionately impacted communities. Specific areas of research may include (but are not limited to): the study of factors affecting exposure to air, soil, or water pollution through exposure detection (e.g., in situ or remote sensing) or attribution (e.g., transport modeling); the study of physiological or psychological health impacts of pollution; or the design or evaluation of pollution mitigation measures (e.g., those along the continuum of constructed and nature-based solutions). Regardless of specific research focus, we seek someone who conducts applied research that contributes to and engages with a socio-environmental systems understanding of relationships between environmental pollution and human health.
The preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. in the environmental sciences, health sciences, environmental engineering, or a related field. We seek a candidate with primary expertise in a natural science or environmental engineering field and a desire to work in an interdisciplinary department that values collaboration across the natural and social sciences and humanities. The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of, or potential for, high-impact output from solutions-oriented collaborative research, obtaining external funding, and building strong partnerships beyond academia. The new faculty member will teach a total of three classes per year across our undergraduate and graduate (Masters and PhD) programs, with the specific course topics to be determined in collaboration with the department. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute—through their research or teaching—to one or more broader initiatives at the University of Colorado, such as the Undergraduate Certificate in Public Health, the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Justice, or relevant research centers, institutes, and initiatives. Who We Are
The Department of Environmental Studies (ENVS) is a community of scholars engaged in teaching, research, and service focused on the multiple dimensions of environmental change. We integrate scientific understanding of human-environment interactions, practical responses to environmental problems, and values that shape our decisions and behavior. ENVS is comprised of 25 faculty spanning the social and natural sciences and humanities. We offer an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies (~800 majors), a professional Masters of the Environment degree (~200 students), and MS and PhD degrees (~40 students). ENVS also offers dual graduate degrees in partnership with the Leeds School of Business, the Law School, and the School of Engineering. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
The faculty hire will participate in the research and teaching missions of ENVS and contribute through service to the Department, University, and profession. This position will consist of 40% research, 40% teaching (three courses per year), and 20% service. This encompasses the following roles and responsibilities:
- Develop and teach courses across the undergraduate and graduate programs.
- Periodically give guest lectures in your area of expertise in ENVS courses.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
- Develop a research program which includes extramural funding and a record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
- Support University, College, and Department governance through work on committees and service.
- Participate in professional service and outreach activities in your area of scholarly expertise.

- This is a full-time (100%), 9-month academic-year position. The anticipated start date is August 2024.

The salary range for this full-time position is $95,000-$100,000.

What We Require
- PhD in environmental sciences, health sciences, environmental engineering, or a related field.
- Ability to teach introductory and advanced courses in Environmental Studies. This could be demonstrated by formal or informal teaching and/or mentoring experience or by well-developed ideas for courses that the applicant could teach.
- Potential to publish original research in peer-reviewed journals and develop an externally funded research program. This could be demonstrated by prior publications or funding, works in progress, or documented attempts to secure funding.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
