The holder of this professorship will join the core faculty of the Swig Program for Jewish Studies and Social Justice, housed in the university’s College of Arts & Sciences, and will also serve as its Assistant Director. The Swig Program features a vibrant, interdisciplinary group of faculty and staff engaged in Jewish studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Anthropology, Jewish studies, Religious studies, or Sociology with expertise in the American Jewish experience, Israel/Palestine studies, Jewish politics and ethics, Sephardi/Mizrahi studies, and/or Judaism, race, and ethnicity. Those with additional expertise in conflict resolution and transformation, and intergroup education, will be given preference. Applicant’s scholarly work should demonstrate broad interdisciplinary grounding in Jewish studies. We are especially interested in those with a strong record of teaching at the university level, evidence of scholarship, and an understanding of and commitment to supporting the mission of the University of San Francisco. Candidates should have a strong record of undergraduate teaching in Jewish studies in courses such as Introduction to Judaisms, the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, and the American Jewish Experience, among others. The successful candidate must be able to offer their reflections on equity, and strategies for success in engaging with BIPOC, first generation, and immigrant students, among others.

 

Job Responsibilities

USF tenure-track faculty are expected to teach 18 units each year at the undergraduate level, typically two 4-unit courses per semester with an additional course each fourth semester.  Course release for administrative roles may also apply. The successful candidate will maintain active research on subjects relevant to contemporary Jewish studies, and contribute to and develop initiatives in areas of research that complement and expand strengths in Jewish studies for the Swig Program in Jewish Studies and Social Justice. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a record of institutional and administrative leadership, mentorship, and professional collegiality. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for helping grow the Swig Program in Jewish Studies and Social Justice on campus and in the broader community through teaching, research, collaboration, and public programming.
