The Opportunity
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Dayton invites applications for a benefit-eligible, tenure-track position in Analytical Chemistry at the rank of Assistant Professor from candidates with the education, skills, and experience to teach fundamental and advanced classes in analytical chemistry/instrumental analysis starting on August 16, 2024. Although all candidates with research interests and experience in analytical or bioanalytical chemistry are invited to apply, candidates with a research focus in at least one area of forensic science are preferred. Department of Chemistry
The American Chemical Society certified Department of Chemistry at the University of Dayton is an exciting, collaborative place to work where opportunities exist to collaborate with department colleagues and other colleagues from across campus. The department offers a B.A degree in chemistry; B.S. degrees in: Chemistry; Biochemistry; Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and a growing graduate program including an accelerated Bachelors Plus Masters degree path and a M.S. in Chemistry. Recognizing the value of hands-on training opportunities, the department supports undergraduate research (including numerous supported summer research projects) where students gain experience using a wide-array of shared instrumentation. Recent instrument acquisitions include: GC/MS, UV-VIS-NIR, TGA, DSC, Bipotentiostat, and a Bruker 400 MHz NMR. In fall 2024, renovations are planned on the research laboratories and offices available to tenured and tenure track faculty. Expectations
A successful candidate is expected to actively and deeply engage in teaching, research and service. Tenure-track faculty teach a 3/3 load (3 courses per semester (fall/spring)). Courses may be foundational general chemistry courses for majors and non-majors, quantitative analysis, analytical chemistry and/or other courses consistent with department needs and candidate interest. The department is also developing a new forensic chemistry concentration, and potentially a new forensic chemistry degree, within five years. Successful candidates are expected to develop a high-quality, visible and externally funded research program for undergraduates and/or graduate students with work published in peer-reviewed journals. Finally, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the vibrancy of the university environment by engaging in service at the department, college, and university levels.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • ABD nearing completion in Chemistry within the general area of Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field, at time of application.
  • Effective written communication skills
  • Desire to teach foundational undergraduate and graduate courses in chemistry
  • Applicants must have a record of research in Analytical Chemistry subjects either published or in press within peer reviewed publications
  • Record of professional presentations at local, national or international meetings.
Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Research and/or teaching expertise in analytical or bioanalytical chemistry and one or more of the following: forensic chemistry, forensic toxicology, forensic DNA analysis and/or another area of forensic science
  • Post doctoral and/or industry/faculty experience
  • Successful experience in any or all of the following:
    • Teaching chemistry classes or laboratories at the college or university level.
    • Teaching general chemistry lecture courses as the instructor of record
    • Teaching chemistry lab courses as the instructor of record
    • Using online course management systems
    • Utilizing innovative teaching approaches and technology to engage students and foster community
    • Teaching and/or mentoring people from socially and culturally diverse communities
    • Working collaboratively with diverse faculty and staff
    • Developing innovative pedagogies for 1st year course sequence
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Effective classroom management skills
  • Commitment to the breadth of education including educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition of social justice and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession
